The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

On Trump becoming a Neocon.

I think his advisors, excluding Bannon, are hammering on his head that being president is a lot more than doing dumb speeches and signing papers.

Perhaps, Trump is getting a dose of reality and finally realizing that he can't deliver his campaign promises without messing up the US, its allies and the world as a whole without getting thrown out of the presidency before he can disrupt things too much.

[up] You used the word "retard" in describing NC Republicans. That is generally considered an ableist slur, and is language that many of us would prefer not be used in this thread.

[up][up]Referring to someone with a word indicating they're somehow handicapped as an insult. And "retard" has been an insult just about forever as an insult to someone's intelligence. (And is also a medical term but it got co-opted as an insult for so long I don't think they use it much in the medical sense anymore.)

[up][up] Eh, fair enough, I suppose. However, that does not change that the current GOP is dumb to the point of being almost non-functional.

[up][up]Well, stupid, mongoloid and idiot were also medical terms used to describe people with Downs Syndrome or other mental handicaps, so in a way the word retard is going through the same process of being disassociated with Down Syndrome and handicapped people to be another regular insult.

If it justifies its use in this Forum isn't my call, but I see many people who don't see retard as an ableist insult but just as a regular insult.

[up]I prefer saying they have room temperature IQnote  when addressing their intellect.

It's basically which medical term turned slur do you consider your cutoff point for denigration of affected minorities. Because the euphemism threadmill will always lumber along eating words.

@justhelping: Wait, you're from NC? Ouf. My condolences. The NC GOP appears to be making a concentrated effort to be the worst part of the GOP. I'm not certain they're succeeding, but I can only imagine what watching them try must be like to a conservative like you.

Besides which, I live/work with a mentally handicapped person and while she can certainly be unpleasant to be around when not getting her way, she's never tried to advocate for the repression of LGBT civil rights, or any other minority group for that matter.

Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.

[up][up] The Iowa GOP are even worse and are probably the worst part of the GOP. And seeing how bad the rest of the GOP are already, that's saying something.

The Kansas branch is pretty bad, but maybe a bright sign in how total incompetence in governing might get voters to turn on them.

[up][up][up][up]Yeah, luckily you guys only have antifa and extreme fringe leftist/internet groups to worry about making your political side all seem like complete idiots. I have, in comparison, an entire party of our two-party system.

The word "retard" can be a verb meaning "to delay or hold back in terms of progress or development."

I think, with this particular definition, it is reasonable to say that the Republican party is retarding the USA and the rest of the world.

Besides, I'm an aspy bastard, so I have N-Word Privileges.

Yes, I know Asperger's isn't that bad, shut up.

Can we just say it's not a very nice word, and that we won't use it. (Unless you are a musician using it as the shortened version of Ritardano)smile

Also trump order Syria attack over slice of "beautiful chocolate cake".

Note that he lovingly describes the cake before saying they sent missiles to attack Iraq.

Somehow our President can remember everything about the cake he was eating while launching a missile attack, but not which country he was attacking.

I sometimes wonder if he really wanted to be president. Sure, he likes bossing people around, and the power he has, but I don't think he really cares about the whole governing part.

[down]. Cake is delicious.

I will fight anyone who dares touch my cake, but if I'm giving an interview about my military intervention in the Middle East I'd certainly get my facts right about it rather than dwell on a cake.

I sometimes wonder if he really wanted to be president. Sure, he likes bossing people around, and the power he has, but I don't think he really cares about the whole governing part.

There were a few reports (don't remember from who and whether they claimed to have sources or just speculating) that Trump wasn't even really expecting to win, he just wanted the attention and once he lost he'd just say it was all rigged and set up some kind of news network or whatever.
