Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

North Korea is warning of a nuclear attack on US soil.
Back when they were gave the first overview of the upcoming special elections, 538 said that the Democrats could count Kansas 4 as a victory of sorts if they lost by less than 20 points. The fact that they lost by less than 10 points means this was a phenomenal result, and is honestly a better sign of an incoming blue wave than anything that seems likely to happen in Georgia 6.
It's a shame that victory here is merely a symbolic one, when just a little more could've made it a result with real consequences. But it's still a powerful symbol to red state democrats across the country- 'if they won your district by less than 20 points, it can be flipped', is what this says.

Their missiles are complete junk that have already exploded mere seconds after they leave the silo several times, so even if it got anywhere near the US it would probably get shot down by US missile defenses easily. South Korea and Japan, on the other hand... now you've got me freaking out. You'd think at least Abe would be screaming bloody murder at Trump for doing this...

Look, the GOP promised to bring back the Filibuster for nominees in 2013. It was a lie then and it's a lie now. Democrats are trying to be the adults in the room. The guy saying it was Ed Markey, a freshman junior Senator. The perfect guy to go out and say a promise that won't bind any of the Senate leadership.
You want to win? Stop complaining about every little thing Democrats do.
As for the Kansas special election...this needs to worry the GOP a lot. A 30 + safe district won by single digits? This is not good news for them.
James Thompson will be running in 2018 following his special election defeat

Then have you actually tried participating in your local Democratic Party yet?
Of course, given what you have to say about almost everything that isn't by George R. R. Martin, maybe the local "death to Amazon store windows" club is more appropriate.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotWell, yeah. That's why I vote Dem. I'm speaking hypothetically although I've met quite a bit of independents that I prefer to the Dems in local races.
Here's the thing, I don't think they're being disingenuous. Modern Dems are famous for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
I fully expect them to take some ill-considered "high road".
Yep. Probably more than most people seeing as I'm in a Democrat club, have campaigned for my local candidates and am in the process of getting political internship with my local Dem.
The Occupy Wall Street club is more my jam.

And have you actually discussed any of your ideas to them? Gotten feedback on whether telling people who aren't white to shut up about their concerns is an excellent idea?

Also, if you want the rest of your fellow Democrats to listen to you, you might also want to avoid making "jokes" about how the South is totally a lost cause and how everything between California and New York is a mistake. We don't want to validate the "coastal elites" crap.

Disgusted, but not surprisedIt does strike me as rather callous to simply tell people that their homes are a lost cause, and that they should drop everything and move to a state that might be miles away. Not to mention impractical.
Seriously, Mad Skillz, how many people here do you think can afford to do that?
Oh God! Natural light!Seriously, Mad Skillz, how many people here do you think can afford to do that?
Oh come on.
Nowhere did I say to drop your life to move to a swing state.
And I've repeated this numerous times already. Go re-read my other posts.

Although if I were to move, it wouldn't be Wisconsin. It'd be Arizona, Nevada or Texas which would probably be purple by the time I did have the means to move.

That's the thing: most people can't afford to just pack up, leave everything behind, and move to another state and go through the process of job hunting, find a place of residency, etc. Especially if they aren't single. And that's not even getting into any friends and family they might be leaving.
Your suggestion is wildly impractical and rather condescending.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI mean, I live in Ohio, so I don't really need to go anywhere.

I suppose I did miss those bits, in which case I apologize.
That being said, I do think you could stand to be a bit more...sympathetic? I don't know, it's just a general feeling I was getting.

Well it depends on what you mean. I've been misrepresented and attacked all of today on here. It makes you cranky.

For those curious, a 20 point jump in support projected back onto 2016 would have meant the Dems getting 67 more house seats (for 255 total and a majority of 37), if you also apply it to the Senate you'd see the Dems have 9 more senate seats (for a total of 55) and if applied to the presidency it would mean a victory of 466 electoral votes (with Alabama being the only state with a coast to not go blue).
Now a 20 point jump isn't possible everywhere, but I think it's worthwhile for folks to see what that kind of momentum can do nationally if it's even half realised.
