Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Technically, he's not a Sex Offender... As far as anyone knows: He had an affair with a staffer and used Campaign Funds (illegally) to finance their "dates".
Bentley used government resources to conduct and hide an affair with one of his long-time staffers. Some of his sexting messages and phone calls were leaked for everyone to cluck over. It's just a sad, lurid little mess.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"RE: the california drought being caused/exacerbated by irrigation.
Basically everyone knew that, but those sweet sweet farm lobby dollars were more or less exempted from conservation efforts. Meanwhile, the city centers were told to curtail usage despite the savings being negligible compared to what you'd save with minimal conservation efforts in agriculture. Never MIND what you'd have saved if they'd actually pushed for real conservation.
No, I'm not extremely bitter about this at all.

"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"Sanders and Perez hitting the road in unity tour
Is Bernie now a neoliberal $hill sellout to the progressive cause for collaborating with the establishment?
Trump is the least legitimate president I've ever seen.
There is literally nothing in his favour. Yet he still has supporters.
They've seen and heard the things he's said and done.
They are complicit in his words and deeds.
It is hard. It is so hard not to hate them. I know I shouldn't. I know they have their reasons, I've read a bunch of analyses on why they did it.
But it is so hard. So hard not to hate them because what they've done is so beyond me, beyond what I consider to be decent behaviour- But I have to cool this hate. I have to cool this rage, because calling them racist, calling them sexist or bigoted, it won't change them. They are still people. They are still capable of empathy, and we need to connect with them, to show them the people they despise are people too. People who deserve the same rights as everyone else. But...
Every now and then, dark thoughts enter my mind and I wish I could curse them for what they've done.

He's outright blasting that it's nepotism in our faces!

[Cook Political Report] KS-04 Moves to Lean Republican, GA-06 to Toss Up
. Apparently Dems are doing better than expected in Kansas and Georgia, enough that CPR is changing their expectations more and more towards the dems (KS-04 from Safe R to Likely R to being now Lean R in the space of about two weeks, and you all know about Ossoff).

Why shouldn't you hate them? Of course in public you shouldn't express such feelings because it's counter-productive but personally I loathe them with a burning passion, anyone who votes for Trump is not someone I care about in anyway.

Trump is currently on pace to surpass Obama's travel expenses (all eight years) by the 1st anniversary of his administration.
http://www.cnn.com/2017/04/10/politics/donald-trump-obama-travel-costs/index.html
Man of the people, ain't he?
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I posted way back that within one month Trump had already spent a tenth of what Obama spent on vacations during his eight years as POTUS.
The first thing he did after inauguration was to take a weekend off.
He takes vacations in a public resort that he owns which means more needs to be spent on security.
As
noted, he takes every weekend off at said resort. Mostly golfing, which is rich considering he was all about ripping on Obama for taking the occasional golf break.
I'd call the man a leech on our country, except leeches actually have medicinal applications meaning they contribute more to society.

Disgusted, but not surprisedNew York will provide free college tuition
, provided those who accept it remain and work in New York for as many years as they took the aid money.
x8: Honestly, that might be the most disheartening article I have read in a week-it aligns with other studies suggesting a sharp political divide in approach to science, with liberal/progressive leaning people interested in science for its own sake, with all the hard right leaners looking at science for what it can advance in their interests.
I mean, FFS, we cannot even have an objective baseline to work with; where are we supposed to go from here?

If he actually does become governor, then yeah things are probably going to be not so hot. But NY has plenty going for it. No need to avoid the whole state or even most of Manhattan just because the eyesore that is Trump Tower is located there.
Also, the pizza in Manhattan is great.

Disgusted, but not surprised@bat: Downstate New York is more or less like California but with financial companies instead of tech companies all over the place. Trump is not particularly well liked here, to put things mildly, and there's no way in hell Donald Jr is going to beat Cuomo or DeBlasio.
