Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

To tie China back to US politics: Trump's escapade into Syria reassures China
that the US again get bogged down in the Middle East at the exense of the pivot to Asia.
And an island the Chinese promised Obama they wouldn't militarize has since been militarized with nary a word of protest from Trump.
The grotesque incompetence of this administration is going to give China and Russia such a huge leg up in the battle of great powers. We'll be lucky to have any unsullied foreign interests by the time Trump's out.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"At the end of the two-day summit, reporters pressed Trump's Commerce Secretary, Wilbur Ross, on whether Xi had promised to make some infrastructure investments in the US, at least. The American side had been expecting such a "gift".
"The best gift was [Xi's] presence," Ross replied. The Chinese agreed to a "100-day plan" to address the trade imbalance, the Americans said, but with no specified goals or outcomes.
A few things less apocalyptic:
- California drought was significantly aggravated by irrigation
, as in by a factor of almost 2 in length.
- ...but in other places Cali's irrigation is helping
. Such as on the Colorado River, long suffering because in 1922 states allotted its water on the basis of bogus runoff data. Old article
- Old article but Cali has also enacted major transportation funding
. Crumbling infrastructure...
On a more local scale, I just heard Ed Gillespie (Republican candidate-apparent for Governor of Virginia) will be holding a short town hall at the defense contractor I work at.
Suggestions for questions I should try to ask if they give us more than a photo-op?
Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages?
Sorry, I can't think of anything as a Brit he could answer for me.
OK. I get why Syria's important to Putin. I suppose what I really meant to say was "Why is Assad so important to Putin?" Couldn't another, less murderous patsy work? I dunno.
I like to think Putin's been secretly bollocking Assad.
"You disappoint me, my apprentice."
I think I'm a little more calm now. I dunno, though.
Trump's pretty much guaranteed to go down as one of the top ten worst presidents. He can't do ANYTHING.
See me eat my words in a month or two.

First coordinate with a group of coworkers. Then if he talks in circles or tries to dodge the question, you'll have a strategy. Also do your homework on some of the issues facing Virgina, and ask him about it and don't let him not give an answer.
Subjects you can address:
-Stance on ACA
-What does he plan to do to address the problem of climate change and encourage Renewible energy
-how will he address issues such as corruption,
-how he will hold both the Government and private companies accountable.
These are just some general ideas but it's better if you can ask about things specific to Virginia.

Edit: and take notes or record what he says and publicize it.

Honestly, the notion that treason could cause the GOP to drop Trump seems unrealistic. They'd more likely go down with the ship.
The UK's Trump is Arron Banks.
If the article is true, then what Russia is probably saying is that any involvement they've had with leaks and hacks that have occurred over the past year should be regarded as little more than a half-hearted opening salvo.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

Well, if North Korea starts lobbing nukes around, China's in the crossfire, so they really have an interest in preventing that.
