The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] As someone who has seen what having multiple strokes does to a loved one, I can honestly say I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Not even Trump.

Also, the idea that a stroke can make someone a better person is kind of messed up.

Hilllary says she won't run for public office ever again.

In her first postelection interview, Clinton alluded to the pain of her loss of the presidency to Donald Trump, hinting that there were times she didn’t want to get out of bed.

“The aftermath of the election was so devastating,” Clinton said Thursday during the Women in the World Summit hosted by Tina Brown at New York’s Lincoln Center. “I had to make up my mind I was going to get out of bed, yes; I was going to take walks in the woods, yes."

“Every woman who enters the public arena needs to grow skin as thick as a rhinoceros. Boy, do I relate to this,” said Clinton, paraphrasing Eleanor Roosevelt. “By the time they were finished with me, I was Typhoid Mary.”

Alright that last line made me laugh.

[up] I don't blame her: The Combination of the current "We want outsiders only" mentality of the Voting Public, and Trump just barely etching out a win from the jaws of defeat against her, I would abandon Politics entirely as well. Hopefully she gets to do a lot of good with the rest of her life.

[up] Honestly, I wouldn't blame her one bit if she decided to spend the rest of her life just having fun and leaving the rest of the world to fend for itself.

The whole "Outsiders are the best" mentality is just horseshit. By that logic, corporations should only be hiring people with no experience whatsoever to be their CE Os.

A "real leftist party"? That does what, exactly? Let itself be caricatured as a defender of war criminals? For Christ's sake, openly tearing down the President's actions after the footage of the gas attacks would have been terrible PR.

The time to tear down Trump over this will come later. The State and Defense Departments are both understaffed and underequipped to really delve into Syria, plus ongoing domestic issues, the fracturing of the Trumpist base, and the Russian backlash will ensure that Trump's new disaster will unfold like a lotus blossom.

[up] It's rather amazing just how little the GOP has accomplished even when they control just about everything.

Actually, looking at the GOP's track record, maybe it's not so surprising.

The GOP continues to fail the test of power.

The Scottish unicorn and the Californian grizzly bear have joined forces to fight climate change.

Now if only the bald eagle would stop trying to peck at its own feet so it could help out.

I always find it annoying when one argues that equality is bad because, in a world of equality, talent and aptitude didn’t matter and everyone would be equally snubbed because someone like a doctor deserve better and shouldn't be treated the same as a postman and vice versa.

This is a fucking strawman and anyone who make this kind of point isn’t interested in having a good debate and is only interested in parroting those edgelord libertarian talking points.

Equality isn't arguing that the strong is not allowed to exist, and as a result, we should drag and force everyone down to the same level. Seriously, even Lenin doesn't believe that everyone should be paid the same wage. You should be paid for what you truly deserve. If you put in more work, obviously, you deserve to get paid or rewarded more.

Inequality exists because the strong receives more than their fair share and oppression is when the strong do everything in their power to prevent the weak from ever becoming strong.

I mean just look at America. The poor need at least (I used "at least" because, obviously, the poor need more) higher wages and tax break to be rich, but in order to receive those things, they need to be rich first. Does that make any sense?

In a truly equal world, talented people would be appropriately compensated for their talents, not snubbed, edgelord.

For example, the rich treat the poor like shit just because they are poor. No one ever said that the rich were not allowed to feel pride in their wealth. No one ever said that the rich didn't deserve the wealth that they are getting. Rather, it is that the rich unfairly discriminate against the poor so much that they create an unsafe living and working environment for the latter. Since the government has failed to enforce its own policies against the discrimination that the poor face everyday, the poor is more than justified in their desire to achieve equality.

You can replace the rich with white people, the poor with Po C, and with some adjustments like replacing wealth with accomplishment or education, the end result is still the same.

So, for a certain troper, please stop using this kind of shitty excuse and justification to make it seems like equality is bad.

Five major US newspapers—the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, Wall Street Journal and New York Daily News—offered no opinion space to anyone opposed to Donald Trump’s Thursday night airstrikes. By contrast, the five papers ran a total of 18 op-eds, columns or “news analysis” articles (dressed-up opinion pieces) that either praised the strikes or criticized them for not being harsh enough

Jesus Christ! The corporate media really want a war with goddamn Syria but then they again go hand in hand with the military industrial complex's gluttony. Just please not another Iraq.

[up][up] Damn, even Bush's administration is more subtle and sleek when they want to go to war for fun and profit in Iraq.

[up] Nah, I think it's more that those guys believe that they are actually special. It's just that the world haven't recognize their superiority yet. In other words, why would they want to upheave the status quo when they stand to benefit from it as soon as the world finally recognize them for the true special people that they are.

Libertarianism has a variety of proposed implementations between left and right. It's just that the American flavor tends to attract some really weird types. For the logical conclusion of American "I Swear I'm Not A Republican (because they're too easy on the poor)" libertarians, see ancaps.
