Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

How about calling it the Stupid Cold War? It has the same apocalyptic potential as the Cold War, but everyone involved is really, really stupid.

something
They are torn between Trumpshills and other shills trying to justify the missile strikes after spending so much time spreading Hillary intervening in Syria will cause WW III' and brown sand people bombed is good.
There are so much mental gymnastics going on it is about to become an Olympic event.
Inter arma enim silent legesAt this point, much of the alt-right seems to have "Let the Middle Eastern savages kill each other while we focus on our problems. And lets not waste a cent fighting them, giving them aid, and definitely not taking in their refugees, because primitive terrorist savages is all they'll ever be" as their main philosophy about the Middle East.

| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |It was time for that after Novemember 8th of last year. As a result of Clinton not being elected, we will be dealing with the fallout of Trump's judicial appointments for 30 years or more. Gorsuch is Scalia II, but more conservative on certain issues, and with a charming, folksy smile instead of cruel, black hearted malice.
But, you know, both parties are the same and I just don't feel inspired and enthusiastic about voting so I didn't bother, just like how I don't go to work or pay bills unless I'm feeling particularly enthusiastic and my boss inspires me to get up and go on that particular day. /bitter sarcasm

| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |For those of you wondering about the effect of the strikes: [1]
Don't worry, the Syrians had plenty of warning and evacuated ahead of the strike. Because nothing says 'military genius' like launching a military strike after mulling it publicly for hours, then informing the people you are bombing and their foreign patrons before you inform Congress.
Also yes [2]
, that particular base is also used by the Russian military. At least we warned them at the same time as the Syrian pilots who just dropped chemical weapons on civilians-need to make sure they had time to get clear.
FFS, 2017, you do NOT have to have 2016 beat by June.

If the intention was simply to destroy equipment rather than kill personnel as a sort of warning shot, that makes sense; the fact that this strike achieves several domestic goals for the Trump administration (gaining support from centrists and deflecting accusations of ties to Russia) make me doubt this was an off the cuff attack; the chemical weapons were just an excuse.
It also establishes that Trump's threats are to be taken serious in advance of a major discussion about North Korea. Which is to say get the fuck out of Seoul if you happen to be there.
