Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I don't recall the specifics but I believe Gabbard has actually spoken in favor of at least some of Trump's stances and has been in contact with his administration.
She inspires very little trust and the idea that so-called progressives are giving her a pass because she endorsed Sanders speaks to a very cult-like mentality where personal loyalty is given more weight than, well, actual policies and political attributes.

Wikipedia has a speculation list
but it's just as valid as anything we'd come up with, really.

I, for one, am happy with these developments.
Im excited to see Assad finally getting what he deserves, or as people on the Internaets ussualy say: "ASSAD GET OUT REEEE".
I bet Mattis is behind this one, and managed to convince Trump after a long while. If we can just dismantle Syria into its parts, and rebuild them, we could have such a wonderful middle east.

Even if it's the United States' place to intervene here (and I'll confess, I'm rather skeptical of attempts to play world police), I am not confident in our ability to "fix" the Middle East. We do not have a good track record with that, and I certainly don't think that Trump can be trusted to manage something like that.

Oh God! Natural light! There are potential gains to be made here. While it's unlikely that the Syrian state problem can be resolved, a US effort to expand the nascent autonomous Kurdistan would, whilst probably pissing off Turkey, stabilize another part of the region and give the US a regional ally. It would also provide a safe haven for refugees if these parts can be rebuilt after the Turkish offensives.
Of course this is the Siberian Candidate, who thinks he's fighting a conventional war where he has the biggest, baddest war dick and that's all that matters.

Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.Trump can't be trusted to fix anything. He can't even properly maintain and repair and secure his own damn hotels (cyber security for one thing sucks and they're all made with cheap foreign materials and the food is overpriced garbage).
And that's if he wants to fix anything. He probably just wants to loot the Middle East, like he's looting America.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI see no evidence that this is anything more than Trump reacting to pictures of dead children. For once, his impulsive behavior may have done something constructive- even a dead clock is right twice a day. But he isnt trying to fix anything. By next week, Trump will have entirely forgotten this whole incident. And probably the rest of the US as well.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.I'd say it is more than that, since it allows him to show off how he's so much better than Obama, although he just ends up as a cheap knockoff again and again (from a cake, to crowds, to healthcare).
And I see no evidence that there is any genuine emotion on his part all. If he feels bad, it's because he's "supposed" to feel bad. That approach show up constantly, it's one of the only consistencies between wildly varying statements: it's always what he thinks he's supposed to say - at the time. Hell, I guarantee it's why Citizen Kane is his favorite movie. His insecurity is well-known, and seeks validation at every opportunity.
Obviously, it's not like the images of Syrian children murdered by their own country has inspired him to reconsider the refugee situation.

@Mad Skillz: do you have the article where you got the "nazi endorses Gabbard" quote?
1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVAnd all it takes is for one Russian serviceman's corpse to turn up and this whole thing will come crashing down. Now Tillerson is blathering about "removing Assad" as if they have the means or a replacement. Trump is going to try and get us further into the conflict every time his approval ratings dip further.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."
