Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Reading tropes such as You Know What You Did
The fuck is wrong with you, Australia and Israel:
The fuck is wrong with them I think is that they believe the Syrian gas attack did merit a response, and I gotta side with Drumpf on this, he responded in such a quick and aggressive way. Was tomahawks the way to go? Me, personally, I thought it would have either come sooner or Trump would not care, his response and the level of his response is signature of Trump using a sledgehammer rather than a scalpel. I think I'm with Australia and Israel in dealing with a problem that had really been there for years if we look at the influence in the media in having stand ins for the conflict, it may be a little extreme, but Bill Clinton I think did the same thing and even if the world is a lot more volatile now I still don't think it will be world ending like some may be fear mongering.
Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than YoursIt is very much a stopped clock moment for Trump, although the alleged lack of coordination with the US military is worrying. Well, that and this being several years late.
It's not about to stop me from laughing at every last damned idiot who insisted that the man who advocated looting Iraqi oil would stay out of the Middle East.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotThe UK too, although they like to suck the US's dick, joined in the Iraq War and are also currently run by crazy right-wingers, so it's not surprising with them: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/04/07/us-air-strike-syria-world-reacted-donald-trumps-decision-intervene/amp/
While a response was needed
1) He probably should have coordinated with the military better
2) Probably should have run it by Congress
3) Maybe the chemical attack wouldn't have happened in the first place if he hadn't recently claimed the USA wouldn't interfere with Assad and Russia.
Same here.

Disgusted, but not surprisedAs much as I'd rather the US dick around less in foreign wars, someone's got to do something to enforce international law when it comes to things like banned weapons or those laws are toothless. I'd rather the response be multilateral rather than unilateral as the US has been wont in recent history and I'd rather it not be Drumph (please oh please let the experts grab the reins on this). But I have less of a problem with retaliating against the Assad regime than I have with the who and the how of it happening.
Russia has called the airstrike a violation of international law and says it has hurt Russian-American relations: http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSKBN1790NU?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=Social

Ok. Listen.
I know Assad is an asshole. I know he had it coming. I know it's great someone stands up to him and puts a stop on his genocidal asshatery.
But bombing ain't the solution to building a nation. Not at this stage. Not at a stage where Syria is still fractioned, where there is no one to take over if Assad is removed, where there is no infraestructure to rely upon...just bombing Assad out of power will do the exact same thing that happened in Iraq. It's going to leave a vacuum that desperate desolate people and warring tribes will take over because there is nothing else anyone could possibly have.
Bombing alone cuz' Assad was doing one of his many asshatery stuff is not something laudable, and while yes, I agree some elements will have to be removed by brute force as it has always been in the case of revolutions, it's not a decision that coming from outside will yield a positive influence.
Some Syrians may rejoice of course at seeing Assad taken down but if he's not there, and no one else is there to put order, then the person who will take power is whoever has more guns at a given moment. Bombs aren't needed in Syria, it's ground forces.
Ultimately, Putin and Trump can jsut bomb more, say they've done their work, and years or months later when some extremist groups pop up everyone will be left wondering HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN. WE KILLED THE BAD GUY!
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesVeto power.
Exception was the intervention in the balkans, where Russia allowed it for a bevy of reasons present at the time. But consider all the feet dragging that happened in for example Rwanda and you could understand.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesGabbard's been discussed several times here. She's an opportunist DINO with some really sketchy backgrounds, particularly in regards to LGBT rights who is nonetheless idolized by some far leftists because she endorsed Bernie in the primaries.
With any luck, being endorsed by mini-Hitler there will disillusion some of them with her.

Imagine someone who is everything HRC's detractors claim she is, but worse. Who is also an apologist for Assad. Someone who is a soulless opportunistic grifter. That's Gabbard.

@Bearyscary
Sadly, normal people with humble backgrounds either aren't able to gain the support of the rich and powerful and the ideologues and/or have the good sense not to run for a position of unfathomable responsibility and power in the first place. You couldn't pay me enough to run for President. Especially if there was a chance I might actually get the job.

Disgusted, but not surprised

Is it possible that this action was designed to distract people from some nefarious domestic policy stunt or something like that?
