Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It might have been a approval stunt: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/donald-trump/12147515/After-tomorrow-Donald-Trump-could-be-unstoppable.html
WHAT THE DEUCE
When the cat's away....
No, in all seriousness, this was a horrific shock to everyone and I'm still not sure what to think about it.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.FWIW: A few hours ago, "#Syria Hoax" was trending on Twitter. Chances are it's driven by bots. I don't know if Assad has access to those sorts of bots (though I'm sure they're availible to the highest bidder) but I do know Russia has people that deal in them on their payroll.
Here's the base that was hit: https://www.google.com/maps?ll=34.49,36.908889&q=34.49,36.908889&hl=en&t=h&z=14
Only thing I'm thinking of is "what next?"
To be honest, I am so far into my own personal bubble I forgot we were completely out of all wars for the time being, so I was initially thinking. "Alright, why is everyone so surprised at the status quo being maintained? Another war on top of all the ones we are currently . . ." And now to finish that thought, "Oh, right. Obama actually managed to finish the ones we were already fighting."
It's still the Syrian and Russian official stance that the Syrian government was not responsible for the gas attack, which the US just attacked the Syrian government over.
Does the US just let Assad go about his business, because ISIS, and just blow some of his shit up every once in a while if he's behaving badly?

@Eschaton: That rather depends on Trump. Syria's a budget operation for Russia, and they've never been particularly fond of the Syrian government's chemical weapons use, so this might just blow over, with the best case scenario being Syrian forces are deterred from deploying further chemical weapons.
@Hodor: It's just an interview at this point, but I'm no longer in a place where I feel like I need to completely torture myself.

Well, on one hand, this has demonstrated to the world that Trump is prepared to follow up on threats he makes. On the other hand, it shows he's prepared to follow up on the threats he makes.
If you happen to be living in Seoul or Tokyo, I'd recommend developing an exit strategy, and canceling any trips to the region.

Donnie boy is taking any excuse he can get to go to Mar a Lago and get some golf on, so probably. But I mean what does he have of interest to tell the Chinese. They have the biggest reason to never trust him of all.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothes
