The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I doubt that spending two years blocking a Trump nominee would hurt the Dems that much, spending a year doing it didn't hurt the Republicans at all.

It made them into a party that can't govern. Unless they were like that already.

I didn't hurt the republicans much because everyone was distracted from it by much flashier shitstorms caused by their nominee.

@Dingo Walley 1: I don't think two years (assuming death in 2018 or early 2019) would hurt Democrats that much, based on the GOP's "performance" last year. Especially if they play it smart and give Trump's nominees a hearing and reject them afterwards.

@sgamer 82: I can't think of any instance where Mc Connell has ever acted as if the Republicans being out of power was even a vague possibility. I don't know if that's because of something that should scare us or he's just that fucking stupid. I think and hope the latter.

I feel the need to remind the thread that the 2018 Senate map is pretty awful for the Dems. They'll need to flip Texas if they want to gain a majority- a blue wave of historical proportions is needed to even make it competitive.

And a blue wave happening at all is still not a given- wait to see what happens in Georgia before calling that, and even then remember that that's a weird case because of the jungle primary and lack of incumbent.

[up][up]Well, the other special elections have had Democrats overperform the expected results, but yeah, it makes sense to be cautious. I'm just trying to be the optimist sometimes.

Self defeating thinking is the Enemy of action. Like if you believe that Washington is hopeless and will never change, you don't show up to vote. If you don't vote you never have the chance of changing things. The best way to create change is to get likeminded people active in their government. If you are worried about the 2018 midterms or on a state level, there are tons of ways to get involved.
