Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Dingo Walley 1: I don't think two years (assuming death in 2018 or early 2019) would hurt Democrats that much, based on the GOP's "performance" last year. Especially if they play it smart and give Trump's nominees a hearing and reject them afterwards.
1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KV@sgamer 82: I can't think of any instance where Mc Connell has ever acted as if the Republicans being out of power was even a vague possibility. I don't know if that's because of something that should scare us or he's just that fucking stupid. I think and hope the latter.
Trump delenda estI feel the need to remind the thread that the 2018 Senate map is pretty awful for the Dems. They'll need to flip Texas if they want to gain a majority- a blue wave of historical proportions is needed to even make it competitive.
And a blue wave happening at all is still not a given- wait to see what happens in Georgia before calling that, and even then remember that that's a weird case because of the jungle primary and lack of incumbent.
"Twitter is suing the US government
after the Trump administration tried to force it to reveal the real identity behind the Twitter account @ALT_USCIS, one of the countless "alternative" government agency accounts that have risen on the social network after President Trump's inauguration."
Self defeating thinking is the Enemy of action. Like if you believe that Washington is hopeless and will never change, you don't show up to vote. If you don't vote you never have the chance of changing things. The best way to create change is to get likeminded people active in their government. If you are worried about the 2018 midterms or on a state level, there are tons of ways to get involved.

When he voted for Tillerson despite his posturing that told me everything I needed to know.
x11 The Georgia special election is April 18th. (There's also a simultaneous state senate race, that's getting far less attention.)

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our lives

I doubt that spending two years blocking a Trump nominee would hurt the Dems that much, spending a year doing it didn't hurt the Republicans at all.
