The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

No matter how cynical I feel or how red my forehead is from facepalming at all the stupidity I witness, ultimately I still believe Rousseau Was Right, and that given enough time, society will shake itself out and the bad elements will be removed. Maybe not immediately, but ultimately we are moving toward a better future. Just gotta survive long enough to get there.

Society doesn't act on it's own. You have to actively purge those elements and maintain constant vigilance.

Daily Beast: Steve Bannon calls Jared Kushner a "Cuck"

Wow. Just Wow.

Bannon is really burning down bridges with the Trump Administration, isn't he?

Not sure if the Alt-Right's gonna abandon Trump or Bannon, or both, though. It's certainly going to create conflicts within that faction.

[down] Not only that, it also implies that either Jared is too weak to leave his cheating wife, or that he approves of his wife cheating on him.

Calling him a cuck implies that Ivanka was cheating on him, doesn't it?

The question then becomes who Ivanka is cheating with if she is. Bannon is certainly is a position to know such family secrets and maybe even reveal them if Trump ever tries to move against him.

At this point, the fact that the remaining sane and rational humans on this planet still have some hope left completely baffles me. I thought for sure that a lot more of you would have given up on the very concept of hope right now. Are your local governments spiking the water supply with anti-depressants or something?
You act as though its that hard to learn German.
Anyway, always thought the theory of progress was hogwash. You can follow the ephebic oath and better the world your ancestors left you or burn it to the ground, and the burning thing is easier. And no, those who do the burning never regret what they've done, and that's if they're even aware of it. And we have the distinct misfortune to live in interesting times.
OTOH, we're arguably dealing with the form of fascism, one expects from a vaccine. Trump is nothing to build aryan superman ideas off of. Even his supporters think he's a moron or go to great pains to excuse his behavior. And the immune reaction: well, the people who sat on the couch instead of voting are finally figuring out that politics is important and gears are moving at the local levels based upon one phrase: Make Trump furious. As often expressed here, tis hard to get any consensus on a god/goal, but you can certainly rally people against a devil—whether its those brown people or that neofascist.

Plus, there's a hidden gem in the GOP's transformation into an ethnic and patron party. Its hinted at in the article on Lahren. Fox's viewership averages nearly 70 years old. And its support is concentrated in sparsely populated and actively emptying small towns and rural areas and in one ethnic group at that. That's not a sign of a bright future. (It also doesn't equal the inevitable doom of reactionary politics). So, yes, playing the waiting game is a mistake, but the main population centers and centers of business/economic activity (ironically enough) are the farthest things from GOP strongholds. The problem is that sanity is a very wide field and a tribal rally is a comparatively easy feat.

It is the default, though if she's anything like her dad, it could be true. I recall coming across an article in which a (nonwhite) comedian talked about how Ivanka walked up to him at a party and started monologuing about all the colours of cock she's regrettably been unable to see.

And I was under the impression that we had agreed not to do that, for precisely those reasons.

[up] See, I wouldn't put it like that. It seems...condescending? A bit of an empty platitude, I suppose. I'd prefer to actively seek solutions rather than just talk about hope.

In any case, though, giving into despair does no good, so I prefer not to go down that route.

[up]Huh? I sound that wallow-y?

British Perspective on the Big Red Button Press (And the picture they use fits so well). Republicans go 'nuclear' to ram through Trump court nominee

Republicans have taken the historic step of changing US Senate rules in order to ram through confirmation of President Trump's Supreme Court pick.

They invoked the "nuclear option" after Democrats used a tactic known as a filibuster for the first time in half a century to block the nominee.

The move will leave Congress even more plagued by gridlock. Republican John Mc Cain said: "Bad day for democracy."

After falling five votes short on Thursday of the 60 needed to confirm Mr Gorsuch, Republican Senate leader Mitch Mc Connell retaliated by voting 52-48 along party lines to rewrite the rules.

Pundits and politicians may lament that Thursday's actions mark the end of comity and bipartisanship in the Senate. The reality, however, is that the Supreme Court nominee filibuster power was already dead and vigorous partisanship reigns supreme. This week just made it official.

That's why both sides long ago began apportioning blame for this move. Democrats point to the Republican Party's unprecedented decision last year to refuse to consider Barack Obama's court nominee, Merrick Garland. Republicans counter that the Democrats struck the mortal blow by abandoning the filibuster for lower court and executive nominees in 2013.

Given the sweeping power of the Supreme Court - it touches on every facet of American life - the stakes have become too high for little things like tradition and consensus-building to merit consideration.

Thursday was about the exercise of raw power. Republicans had the votes, and they wanted - they needed - their man on the high court to preserve their conservative majority. On Friday they will get him there.

Senator Jeff Merkley, an Oregon Democrat, tweeted: "The dark deed is done. Mc Connell has just put a knife into the heart of our We the People republic."

Even top Republicans have misgivings about the move.

"I fear that someday we will regret what we are about to do. In fact, I am confident we will," said Mr Mc Cain, an Arizona senator, as he entered the chamber on Thursday morning.

"It is imperative we have a functioning Senate where the rights of the minority are protected regardless of which party is in power at the time."

[up][up] Sorry, I didn't meant to sound like it...it's just hope is something vital to all of us and to consider it irrational is what irritates me as much as you do. I didn't meant any harm, I was simply saying what I felt for those words.
