Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@sgamer82: You assume too much in thinking that karma will ever apply to the Republicans.

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's DictionaryFirst off, false equivalencies like the ones in that article are a major part of apologia everywhere. Secondly, even if you ignore the association, the article literally states that none of the countries it talks about, including the Empire of Japan, posed a direct threat to American interests, which is a flat out lie. The Empire of Japan did pose a direct threat to American interests, and in fact launched assaults on American held territory.
To lie about that and portray America as the aggressor against a nation that could not harm it, as the article does both implicitly (comparing Imperial Japan to North Vietnam) and explicitly (saying none of these nations, including Japan, posed a threat to America) is the definition of apologia.
I mean Imperial Japan turned my grandmother into an orphan so I think you can concur that I didn't mean to share apologia of Imperial Japan. Although I don't think I even did to begin since I think you're over-thinking it.
I have distant relatives who were directly effected by the Nazi occupation of Norway. If I shared an article claiming Nazi Germany posed no danger to American interests and that D-Day and the ensuing occupation of Germany were evidence of American gangsterism you'd have every right to a) call it Nazi apologia and b) do your best to nail me to the wall for it. Regardless, by the way, of whether I meant to share apologia or not.
I'm really not sure what the point is of continuing this conversation. You say you didn't mean to share apologia? That's fine. I believe you. That doesn't change the fact that that article was apologia and that in your initial post at least, you did not make it clear that you did not agree with all the parts of the article; fortunately, that's easily remedied for the future. Just make it clear next time you don't agree with all parts of the article you're sharing.
RE: Filibuster
It's not like it matters whether it gets nuked now or in the future. People have been saying "save it for when a liberal justice needs to be replaced" but the reality is the Republicans would just have gotten rid of it then as well. I mean just look at that speech of McConnel's that was quoted. The man is a walking, talking sleaze, who is happy to accuse everyone but himself of enforcing a double standard. He was never going to play fair; I'm not sure he knows what playing fair even means.
@sgamer82: At this point, the fact that the remaining sane and rational humans on this planet still have some hope left completely baffles me. I thought for sure that a lot more of you would have given up on the very concept of hope right now. Are your local governments spiking the water supply with anti-depressants or something?
