The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] Thank God! The House Investigation will finally be doing it's job again!

@Bannon Threatening to Quit: Please let him be serious. I want him to be out of Government entirely. I'd rather him be a successful Neo-Nazi news peddler then have any one's ear who has the ability to launch nukes.

[down][down] It was a figure of speech to say how powerful Trump is. Plus, you don't think Trump could get, say, "Mad Dog" Mattis, to say "Yeah, go ahead and launch 'em" in writing?

Interesting article on why the republicans can't "repeal and replace" The ACA.

Huh?

The president on his/her own cannot launch nuclear weapons. They need at least one Senate-confirmed officeholder (say, secretary of defense) to countersign. And responding to a nuclear strike by someone else is something many people can do.

So with the earlier mention of Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) and his "I'm ashamed of government inaction on Syria" line? Yea, I'm getting that Twitchy Eye because, less than two years ago, that same asshole was calling for a complete halt on accepting refugees from Syria into the US pending a security review.

That statement he gave out was neither very strong nor a commitment to do anything. (Think of a pageant contestant's answer). And, even if he was sincere, those two positions aren't contradictory. You can wish upon stars for world peace aplenty and still not want those people over here. In essence, I wouldn't read too much into Kinzinger's (or anyone's) shame for inaction.

Trump has informed Congress that he is considering military action in Syria, after the Sarin attack.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/04/06/politics/donald-trump-syria-options/index.html

But I thought Trump would get the US out of pointless wars and archaic crap like NATO, and that Killary was the warmonger?

Russia is pissed at Trump's "quick name calling" of Syria's Assad, in the harshest bash to Trump from Russia yet.

[up] And it seems like Trump is willing to fight the Russians in Syria. Seems like Cold War 2 is gearing up because of two greedy Strong Men.

Wonder if Russia will leak the rumored Pee Tapes?

I mean, this would do a lot to counter the accusations about him being Putin's bitch.

You know, assuming he doesn't just take Assad's side and act to end the war quickly or something...

There will be far-reaching consequences for this. Hopefully the Republicans will once again discover that short-term gains do not make up for long-term losses.

Their supporters will cheer them on the whole time. Nothing matters to them, they have no principals. All that matters to them is that they fuck over democrats.

[up] You assume that they will lose in the long term. So far, republicans have been very successful at both long term and short term victories, mostly because their core supporters are morons and democrats can't come to a consensus if the world depends on it (which, incidentally, it does.)

Trump considering military action in Syria: So I suppose "warmongering" is OK after all if you're a cis man?

Also, here's a fun quote from professional piece of shit Mitch McConnell-

“This is the latest escalation in the left’s never-ending judicial war, the most audacious yet, and it cannot and it will not stand. There cannot be two sets of standards: one for the nominees of the Democratic president and another for the nominee of a Republican president.”
