The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm still confused about Pat Bell, who voted for Trump but said fences and walls don't work. The wall was the only concrete policy he expressed the entire campaign.
And boy is the administration keeping the courts busy. This election could be good for my line of work after all...

[up][up]There is a special kind of shamelessness in that tweet.

I think a lot of voters treat Trump like a blank sheet of paper. Not a single bit of content, just everybody's favourite piece of wishful thinking projected onto it.

Madskillz...don't cite that stupid video of "Oh, Bernie Sanders won over Trump voters by talking to them!" Not everything can be solved by a decent chat about healthcare. One stupid moment of "But he got some cheers" does not mean they'll vote for him in a general election.

Seriously, this notion you can subtract things like race and environmentalism from West Virginia...

Seconded. I can argue all I want with the people in my ultraconservative hometown. I can get them to agree with me on certain points. I can get them to admit I am right and they are wrong. I can explain my candidate's positions and get them to say he seems like an honest guy. And yet, in the end, they'll still vote for the archconservative candidate because that is what they've always done.

Not necessarily. The GOP can change the rules and ram him through, but that'll have far-reaching political consequences (best explained by others).

Trump finally keeps his campaign promise and donates his Salary to NPS. Still doesn't make up for the proposed budget cuts.

*Do note there's a few problems with his definition of Populism, the main one for our purposes being he created it as an attempt to whitewash the usage of "populism" into something neutral/good.

Is cloture the proper name of the 'nuclear option'? That's what I took it as, in context.

A motion for cloture is a roll-call vote to end a filibuster, requiring 60% of votes in the Senate to pass. If McConnell is calling for cloture, it means he is not using the "nuclear option", which would be a Senate rules change, voted on by simple majority, to eliminate the use of the filibuster against judicial nominees.

Correct. Democrats have sufficient support to block a cloture motion, meaning that Gorsuch will not be confirmed.

Is he trying to time it in a day when there are fewer senators in attendance, since it's a roll call vote?

If not, then why do it knowing it won't succeed? Fuel for a future Nuclear fire?

[down] Thanks anyway for answering

It is unclear why McConnell would invoke cloture on Gorsuch when he knows he lacks the votes to pass it. Perhaps he's just making a point? If so, one wonders what that might be.

[up] That the Republicans are so spineless, they won't fight Democrats when it comes to Filibustering a Supreme Court Nominee?

I wouldn't imagine in my wildest dreams that the Democrats would successfully filibuster Gorsuch and the Nuclear Option would not be used!

How do you respond to a Trump supporter asking for evidence about Russia. It's fun to watch them flail under the weight of verifiable facts. But on the other hand I could just ignore. Thoughts?

He's forcing them to commit to blocking Gorsuch, I guess. Wants them "on record".

[up][up] You could be a dick and ask them why they cared so much about Clinton's emails when there was far less evidence of wrongdoing.

Mercedes, BMW, and Hyundai dump O'Reilly Factor amid lawsuits

Three advertisers have pulled commercials from Fox News' most popular show because of sexual harassment claims against its host, Bill O'Reilly.

Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, and BMW have each pulled advertising following the "disturbing" allegations.

The New York Times reported on Saturday that settlements of $13m (£10.4m) were reached with five women who accused him of inappropriate behaviour.

The network now faces lawsuits alleging both racial and sexual discrimination.

A Fox News contributor sued on Monday, alleging sexual harassment by its ousted former chairman, Roger Ailes.

Adding to the network's legal woes, a third African-American employee joined a racial discrimination lawsuit on Tuesday.

Monica Douglas, a Fox News accounts manager, alleges former executive Judy Slater repeatedly made racist comments and expressed "an unwillingness to even be near black people".

Ms Douglas said in her court filing that she first complained about Ms Slater in 2014, but "nothing was done".

Mr O'Reilly, 67, did not discuss the allegations against himself on Monday night.

His show instead featured segments on Democrats opposing President Donald Trump and a story about college liberals.

Hyundai said it would remove forthcoming ads from The O'Reilly Factor because of the "recent and disturbing allegations".

One of Mr O'Reilly's accusers is Wendy Walsh, a psychologist who was once a regular guest on The O'Reilly Factor.

She accused the host of withdrawing a job offer after she declined his invitation to go with him to his hotel suite after a dinner in 2013.

Ms Walsh told CNN on Monday night: "I want to be clear, I'm not after money. I just want a nontoxic work environment for my daughters and their generation."

Her lawyer, Lisa Bloom, said Fox News was the "Bill Cosby of corporate America", in reference to the TV entertainer who is facing multiple sex assault claims.

The president of the National Organization for Women, Terry O'Neill, called for Mr O'Reilly's dismissal.

She said that "the reported use of his powerful position to repeatedly manipulate women reveals a cruel misogyny that runs to the core of his character".

"Women have the right to go to work without facing harassment. Fox News apparently doesn't get that basic concept," she added.

In a statement over the weekend, 21st Century Fox stood by Mr O'Reilly while adding that it "takes matters of workplace behaviour very seriously".

Yes, I'm still a bit miffed about that one segment he did that played up Asian stereotypes last year.
