Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Out of curiosity, why so much vitriol for Starship Troopers? I actually found the premise to be an interesting one, and even the novel kind of left it unclear about how much of the news was fact and how much was propaganda (namely the asteroid hitting Argentina being used as a rallying cry to squash the bugs).
Plus, I honestly like the idea of requiring some form of public service - whether it be in the military or community beautification group (which is what the Pluto cleanup stuff amounted to) - in order to have someone run for office, as it exemplifies the idea of "Service above self". After all, we wouldn't have Lord Dampnut in office if that were required, and Dick Cheney would have been similarly disqualified. And that said, expanding it to anyone wanting to vote is a bridge too far - just those that want to hold public office.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Starship Troopers and its hard on for the military is not the topic of the thread. We did make another topic for relating media to US politics, or you can start your own.
Plus, it was basically about a military coup that then instated the rule that you couldn't fucking VOTE if you hadn't served in the military; civilians didn't count as citizens, apparently. Not exactly defensible.

That's a gross misrepresentation; we can discuss what Starship Troopers actually meant in the Heinlein topic over in the Literature forum if you want.
The Times claims to know who gave Nunes the Information Trump was 'incidentally' caught in surveillance: Ezra Cohen-Watnick, a Senior Director at the NSA, and Michael Ellis, a Lawyer for the NSA.
Of course, Nunes refuses to say if it was or wasn't them, but Michael Ellis was the target of previous Speculations on who gave him the Info.

Sigh, not the military specifically but government service. Non-military occupations are mentioned when Johnny applies and he automatically waves them away because he's trying to impress a girl. Also it's mentioned that you cannot be denied from serving no matter what condition you're in. As Heinlein mentions you could be blind and paraplegic and they'd still have to take you.

Trump delenda estSenator Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) to vote for Gorsuch for the Supreme Court.
If I were a less rational and vindictive person, I'd fully support primarying the fuck out of her, but considering that Mitch needs 8 Dems to confirm him to the Senate, and we need more Dems than not in our eventual 2018 blue wave....
Fuck it. I'm annoyed and pissed off, but have to think of the long game.
New Survey coming this weekend!@Fox (the Cambridge Analytica-Russia link): well, there's a Bannon link to Russia, and seeing as Pence was suggested as VP by Manafort, is there anyone in the Trump swampinistration who's not linked to Russia one way or another?
Also, do we have some way to "sanity-check" (for lack of a better term) this entire thing? I want to know if we're not just becoming so paranoid everyone is an enemy.

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVTrump threatened Rep. Mark Sanford (R-SC) through Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-SC), saying that he hoped Sanford would vote against Ryancare so that Trump could run a Primary Challenger.
Despite this, Sanford still wants to help this President.
The Republicans really don't know what to do. They're not the party of Get Things Done, they're the party of NO! and "I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!!" Anyone who counts on them to do anything is self deluded in the extreme. They're a legislative terrorist organization now, not a functioning party. They should be classed that way, dissolved, and replaced by the Dems splitting up into Conservative Dems and Progressive Dems. Different names, obviously, but you get the point.
Michael Flynn is offering to testify in exchange for immunity from prosecution.
It's the Wall Street Journal so anything beyond the headline is behind their paywall, but it'll be everywhere in a few minutes.
EDIT: A bit of interesting info, apparently he's not had any takers on the offer.

So the tweeting was true!
Please, someone, anyone, protect Flynn! I'd rather he be a free man if it means we can get rid of all the other Russian Traitors! Please!
I'm sure somebody can, it's just really worrying that no one has taken him up on the offer. If he dies in the next couple of days, we'll all know why...

X3 Because the primary would either divide the Dems within the state and out the seat even more at risk( if she won) or put in place a contender who would then almost certain,y loose the seat due to lack fo injubancy advantage( if the challenger won) and thus cost the Dems a senate seat.
A Dem senator who votes with Trump even 50% of the time (which I don't think any do) is still better than a Republican who votes with Trump 95% of the time.

x3. I don't know. I think that would rely on one factor: How deep is he in this shit. If he turns out to be embedded into the dealings of the Trump Administration, then he might be held accountable regardless of what ever protection he might be offered. To put simply, the deeper he is, the less likely the news would be able to (or want to) protect him.

Somewhat relevant to this thread, my Prime Minister was the latest European leader to meet the sentient septic tank with bad hair.

This comment on Reddit has my eyes like O_O!!
Like...holy fuck.
There's going down the rabbit hole, and then there's a black hole abyss.
If Trump was the first Trojan Horse of the FSB....
How do we know they aren't funding local politicians and flying COMPLETELY under the radar?!
