Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I only know of one: Of a Mexican who has lived 'illegally' in this country for 20+ years in Indiana. He owned a Restaurant, had a family, had an SS Card, and was generally beloved by the Community. Him and his wife, and his wife's family, voted for Trump, and he was then arrested only a week into Trump's tenure, to the shock of the entire town. I hear he's only weeks away from being deported, and that nobody has been able to get him free.
I wouldn't be surprised if there were more, though.

Biden wouldn't have brought out anyone new to vote but he would've picked off supporters from both sides.
That he resembles Hillary ideologically is what makes me think that it would've ultimately come down between Sanders and Biden rather than Hillary.
Okay, maybe I wasn't altogether clear: His son just died. This isn't some "Well, maybe..." This is quite simply "Biden himself clearly said he wasn't sure if he could have made the effort due to his grief over the death of his child." And this assumes Biden's own issues don't crop up in a general election, with his support for the Bankruptcy Bill to name just one.
Also, kindly drop that talking point of "FBI investigation!" What happened was a complete, trivial nonscandal that amounted to nothing, where the head of the FBI announced the investigation was done and absolutely no reasonable prosecutor would bring charges. As anyone with knowledge of the case and statute could foresee. What could not be foreseen was said Director of the FBI going on to inappropriately editorialize to damage a candidate.
What could further not be foreseen was said director inserting himself into the race eight days before the election to sabotage a candidate. What could have made a difference, meanwhile, is the notion of not painting a reliable center-left policy wonk as the daughter of Satan, deciding she was the Face Of The Corrupt Establishment Responsible For All Ills in the World And Every Bad Thing In The Last Twenty Years Please Pay No Attention To My Vote On the Crime Bill Please. I am not blaming Sanders supporters, or even Bernie or busters for this but to pretend that the leftist rhetoric against Clinton wasn't insanely irresponsible doesn't work.

Yes-there were a couple of stories posted a week or more ago; one about an Iranian family that voted for Trump and found their family stranded overseas by the first ban, and a Syrian man who stumped for the Republicans and found his green card suspended. It may not be many but this is definitely happening; a search should turn up the article links.

- Tales of deportation in Trump's America: Week Two
- See Roberto Beristain; though twas his wife that was the confirmed Trump voter

HRC was getting it from both sides. Hell, they often used the same damn talking points. The entire reason Trump offered vocal support to Sanders during the Democratic primaries was that Sanders and his supporters kept providing Trump with more talking points he could (and did) use against HRC in the general election.
As for Biden...I agree. The man's son died recently. I know that if I was in that position, I wouldn't be able to focus on campaigning or running the country afterwards.

Disgusted, but not surprisedTrump Surrogate and Special Aide, Boris Epshtyn, has resigned from his position.
No reason has been given as to why.
It doesn't matter why Epshtyn is leaving, he seems like a terrible person all around. This guy physically assaulted a person in Arizona in 2014, and only avoided Jail Time by going to Anger Management and doing Community Service.
A new position at the WH is being made for Trump's Son-in-law Krushner:
Ain't nepotism great.

Heh, maybe Ryan should have gotten on all fours to beg the guy like a dog. It wouldn't surprise me if Ryan actually considered doing that.
If there's any silver lining to this clusterfuck, it's the total emasculation of Paul Ryan.
That said, if he does end up being replaced as Speaker, with our luck his replacement will make us miss him, just as his appointment made some of us miss Boehner.

Yeah, if you literally have to grovel at anyone's feet to try to accomplish something, you know you're screwed. Ryan really should resign. Hell, he should probably leave Congress entirely over this.
Let's face it, it doesn't matter that he's one of the saner voices in the Republican Party; the Party is run by nuts who, apparently, don't give two craps about his leadership. If they aren't going to listen to him, it doesn't matter how sane he is, because they will act insane no matter what he wants.

I'd take an ineffectual and flawed voice of reason over somebody actively contributing to the crazy any day.
I can sympathize with that, but I can't agree, because a) it is, in fact, probably more Ryan's fault than Trump's, b) scapegoating congress is a bad idea, because he'll need to stay on their good side if he wants to get anything done and not just spend the next four years looking incompetent and weak.

Pretty much what Dingo said. It should be painfully clear at this point that trying to keep sane Republicans around is the equivalent of trying to plug the hole in a sinking ship with cheese graters: it's going down either way, it's not getting rid of the water that's already in the boat, and you're probably just going to cut yourself on them in the process. The "sane" Republicans are no longer in control of the party. At least their being purged by the radicals should drive moderate voters toward the Democrats, or at least away from voting Republican for a while.

You still have to remember, though, that he was the ass who helped write the AHCA. If he had it his way, the bill would've been in the Senate by now. Plus, Ryan is deep in Trump's pockets. If the voice of Sanity is aligned with Trump... I think I'd rather align with the nutters right now...

I have heard stories of people who are surprised that Trump is rounding up "the good ones," AKA people they liked.
