The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

No one expected a businessman to completely understand the nuances, the complicated ins and outs of Washington and its legislative process.

Poor Trump, how can we expect him to know how to actually do his job?

The sad part is, I don't think anyone who's ever held that position has truly understood all the ins and outs. The difference, of course, is that they are smart enough to ask someone who does.

Most of them had some kind of political experience on top of that, though.

I don't think she is wrong to criticize Ryan for not having something adequate to present after 7 years, but her using the criticism to try and salvage Trump's role in the whole thing and absolve him of any responsibility is some pretty intense mental gymnastics.

I for one am sick of people trying to normalize Trump and still insisting that we just need to "give him a chance".

He had months to figure out the job. Instead, he blew them off playing golf and going on victory rallies.

Trump is nothing but a big, wrinkly, Cheeto-smeared baby. Literally everything he's done is ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME and either go on tantrums or run off to play with his toys when he doesn't get his way

For chrissakes his cronies basically have to dangle keys in front of him on a daily basis to keep him content

Which I guess explains his frequent golfing breaks at Mar-a-lago.

Yeah, but who would replace Ryan? Are we sure that the Freedom Caucus and the moderates would be able to vote yes on the same guy?

Would it be possible for the Democrats and the more moderate GOP to agree on a moderate and get them elected?

[up] Not as long as the "Moderate" GOP are dominated by the less moderate ones.

[up][up][up] Probably not, certainly not without lengthy and probably acrimonious wrangling, which is fine with me.

[up][up] Possible but not likely. If it happened it would probably either be the end result of or the cause of a Republican civil war.

[up][up]What I'm wondering is whether or not there are enough moderate GOP and Democrats to outvote the more extremist ones.

Its apparently a 'intimidation figure' ie a high number he can 'compromise on' later in negotiations.

The only way this figure makes sense is if he looked at, say, the number of years when the Bundeswehr has been underfunded compared to the 2% of GDP figure set by NATO and then somehow retroactively made this into money the US would get?

For reasons?

...Holy shit, this clown is determined to ruin every single alliance the US has. I mean, what does he expect Germany to say about this? "Oh, well, you have a point. Shall we sit around the table to discuss a payment plan?"

Is what Trump did illegal? I thought Congress controlled the Purse, and thus were the only ones who could demand repayment on Debt from anyone? At the very least, this has to be an absolute Abuse of Power, right?

sgamer82 Since: Jan, 2001

I think at this point our only hope foreign policy wise is that our allies come to the conclusion American was on some kind of collective bender that they can lord over us when we hit the hangover phase.

That said, I think how easily salvageable this will all be will depend on how long we let Trump stay in office.
