The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up][up][up]"Day late and a dollar short" doesn't even begin to describe such an apology.

And as for a new healthcare law passing, it would have to be a decent one. Trumpcare pisses off the reactionaries (and the Dems), while a full repeal scares off the moderates (who team up with the Dems to stop it). So he'd need to bring up something that could appease the Democrats and mainstream Republicans. Good luck, Ryan.

That pretty much can't happen with the level of partisanship going on right now.

Doesn't help that the only real way forward is some sort of public insurance, if nothing else then to help control cost.

[up][up] According to Seth Abramson's twitter, which he claims he got info from CNN and a Harvard Professor, Michael Flynn is going to expose as much dirt as he has on Trump to the FBI in exchange for Protection from them. If it is True, we're going to learn about the shadiest shit that's been going on from Trump, which may prove that Trump is a Russian Stooge.

That is absolutely huge! Not only was 2016 the first time a Foreign Power actually interfered in the US's election (though only 'indirectly'), this would be the first time a Presidential Candidate actively worked with a Foreign Power to get himself elected!

Again, that all depends on if these Tweets are true.

[up]Oh, that. I already knew about that, all the way since last fall. Hell, I thought everyone knew. The only difference now is that it may just be official. It's big news, certainly, but it's not shocking news, at least for me. Actually, the only reason I asked was because I thought you were thinking about something even worse. Not that this isn't already bad as is.

Trump needs his own scandal suffix. What he did is significantly worse than Nixon.

Trump would become the first American President impeached and convicted for high treason. Sounds good.

Report: Bannon told conservatives 'this is not a debate,' you have to back bill.

Obviously, that didn't work.

You know, if I recall correctly, in one of the early debates (i.e., when Jeb Bush was still in the running), Trump actually defended Planned Parenthood, saying that they did good things for women's healthcare. And yet here he is, saying that it has to go.

Not that I'm surprised by this, of course. Just another thing I'd like to seem him called out on, I suppose.

Oh God! Natural light!

I think it was honest advice. When you look at the flustercluck the GOP nominations were, I don't think Biden would have been able to make any solid difference if he had tried to run. <_<

People like Bannon need discrediting and their infowars visibly spiked before moderates like Biden can have a solid run and hope to get anywhere. :/

It wouldn't have gone over well with the DNC establishment either, at least those who were convinced Hillary was the heir apparent..

I'm not so sure Biden's run in the primaries owulda been as smooth as he said there especially with democrats having been rather split between bernie and hillary in the first place.

A Biden candidacy would've either ended with him winning or Sanders winning but I lean towards Biden winning.

I say Sanders winning and not Hillary because I suspect that Biden's base would've been similar to Hillary's base in the primaries.

Hindsight is 20/20. While I'm more positive Biden could have rallied the party better, almost all of us were saying the election was Clinton's to lose, and didn't think his presence necessary.

I dunno. I still think people woefully underestimate Hillary just cuz immediately relating her to criminal shady stuff is a social meme at this point. But from my understanding primary voters tend to be older people who I think remember Hillary more like this

I have a feeling Bernie would have dug up dirt about Biden to attack him with. Biden is more popular but he's still part of the same branch of the Democrats as Hillary and Bernie would have used that.

I think Biden had better odds by virtue of being of a man and not a Clinton, as well as building on the goodwill of the Obama administration. Granted, this election (and the primaries) was going to be a clusterfuck either way but I feel he might have stood at odds. I see it being somewhat harder to run a smear campaign against him the way it was easy against Hillary and how even easier it would be to run one against Bernie.

Though to be fair to Joe as well, his son died not too long ago and in every interview you can see Biden is shaken to the core by this. The man wasn't in a very good mental state to run for President.

I can see a scenario where Biden running might have divided the more moderate vote similar to what happened on the Republican side.

Unlike the Republicans I think either Biden or Clinton would have bowed out quickly in favor of the other if that was the case.

Biden is a lot harder to target than Hillary. And he wasn't under FBI investigation which did half the talking against Hillary to a lot of people.
