The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This is how Kleptocracy works. Use your muscle to push your own garbage on everyone else while you rob them blind. They want to dismantle and sell the US government for profit, or to clear the way to pave the US with their Randian dystopia.

Even Ayn Rand would point the finger at these people and say, "Taker, look in the mirror. YOU'RE the enemy."

"My father loaned me the money, I paid it back."

"John Galt didn't get loans. Ever. Plus you changed your father's will to rob the rest of your family blind. You are the lowest, slimiest creature on this planet and if I had big enough boots I would stomp you into a stain on the carpet."

Only in more boring words emphasizing the normal parts of him as evil too. tongue

You know what I just realized? Trump can't let Obamacare die. The failure of the vote today proved one thing: The Republicans are too divided over Healthcare. Let's say Obamacare does die under Trump's watch. What are they going to replace it with, and how? The Democrats would want to create some form of Universal Healthcare that no Republican would vote for. The Teapublicans would want to leave the Market alone, but Moderate Republicans and Democrats know they have to do something or else it will completely die, as will Millions of American Citizens. Moderates would want to create a modified ACA/AHCA, but then the other sides will point and say "This is just a worse version of the thing that just died!" The 3 Factions have such wildly differing wants on how to fix Health Care, that if Obamacare dies, there would be Chaos for a year or so.

With Bernie Sanders growing influence, the Democrats can also angle Obamacare's 'death' with the promise to make sure no American ever loses Health Care ever again with Universal Healthcare, which more Americans want at this point. The Republicans won't have any plan, or any good plan, to go against it.

Of course, if Obamacare ever does get into any serious danger, the Democrats can come up with their own plan that shores it up. Even if the Republicans vote it down, they can use it to prove that they supported protecting American's right to Health Care.

Would make for an interesting deconstruction at least. A Batman story showing how someone like him would work out in real life as both a billionaire and a vigilante. (though I could also see such a story being accused of ripping off The Dark Knight Returns, among other stories.)

That said, Batman for the most part has a strong moral compass and empathy for people who aren't as rich as him — possibly because his own butler was his Parental Substitute from age 8 onwards.

Speaking of Batman and taxes...now I'm wondering if Bruce tries to write off his Batman related expenses as business expenses. Probably not though, since that would leave him vulnerable to an audit.

I just assumed that he paid his taxes legit, and donated to charity out of the good of his heart/for the rebates. Obviously he has to commit a little bit of fraud for his Bat gear, but he also technically commits B&E and assault on a nightly basis, not to mention being in violation of international arms control treaties.

[up] such is the life of an Anti-Hero.

Anyway I found a few articles on Keystone.

one article claims the Keystone pipeline is actually a plus for the environment. (Something I feel needs verification. This article seems to have an anti-environmentalist slant to it. The site itself is giving a right-wing vibe IMO)

another claims that there might not be enough demand to build it because tar sands are no longer as popular/profitable.

and one that says that Ohio groups fear that the pipeline sets a bad precedent (mainly that it doesn't go far enough to protect land and water).

Trump has made me sour on all billionaire characters that play at super-hero.

It's strange because there was a viral video made seven years ago where the Joker uses Insane Troll Logic to conclude that Batman is Donald Trump, and now it's just awkward.

That said, Batman for the most part has a strong moral compass and empathy for people who aren't as rich as him — possibly because his own butler was his Parental Substitute from age 8 onwards.

Sure, but he also focuses his efforts primarily on street crime which, statistically speaking, means a majority of his foes are probably the impoverished and desperate.

Iron Man at least has the common decency to focus his wealth to battling international terrorism, world-threatening invasions, and the like. Batman's probably hospitalized a disproportionate number of underprivileged working class. He's a billionaire who's devoted his life to finding poor people to punch.
