Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Very much so. Just about anything beats the U.S. system pre-Obamacare, and while the latter is not perfect, it's a stepping stone to even better things later. Especially as it survived the repeal attempt.
Far from a myth; a lot of people put off going to the doctor because they fear getting pulled into an expensive battery of tests on a doctor's say so and having no way to pay for it-accurate or not, the fear is real. I know several people personally who flat out refuse to go to the doctor without a life threatening injury or sickness.
When people talk about wait times in Canada, they tend to omit something rather important. If you're there for a weird rash or a persistent cough, you'll probably be waiting a while. However, if you show up with appendicitis, or persistent bleeding that won't go away, or something genuinely life threatening, you're immediately bumped to the top of the wait list. As long as you're clear about what the actual problem is.
One of the latest to be introduced and to target the Trump administration: the "Making Access Records Available to Lead American Government Openness Act."
Yes, the "MAR-A-LAGO Act."
The legislation would require the publication of White House visitor logs, something that was done regularly by the Obama administration but has since ended since President Trump took office. It would also mandate the release of visitor logs at other locations where the president conducts business — for example, Mar-a-Lago, Trump's Florida resort that he has recently called the Southern White House.
Of course not.
Pence will start vetoing everything out of spite once Trump's been impeached for his numerous, numerous actionable offenses that the GOP refuses to talk about.

I think Pence would have enough dignity and understanding of Politics that, even though he wouldn't work well with a Democrat Congress, they would work.
But you're also assuming that the Republicans will have had impeached Trump between now and next year. Trump doesn't really face any problems with Impeachment unless a) it's December 2018 or b) they find something really bad about Trump that they have to do it.
Not unless he does something Criminal. So far, he hasn't slandered anyone, he hasn't tried to obstruct justice, he hasn't abused his power, and he hasn't been collaborating with the Russians (as far as we know). A lot of Trump's administration will at least be tried on these Grounds in 2018-2019, even Trump himself will, but Pence will probably not.

If he's found to be connected to anything, yes. At which point succession would fall to the President pro tempore of the Senate.
Don't get your hopes up on that front, though. Pence has been heavily divorced from all this Russia nonsense.
No, the assumption is actually that if by some miracle the Dems retake both houses of Congress in 2018, the first order of business will be showing Trump the door.

I wonder how he's feeling now?
Eh, fuck him. Bartender, give me more of that schadenfreude!

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.Republican from Texas openly admitting what we've been saying for the past 5 years
Basically. What they wanted was to rant and rage and cry about how everything Obama ever touched was bad.
Problem was, with the insane amount of control over Washington they won in this election, now they had to put their money where their mouth was and nobody had even the slightest idea how to do that. Repealing Obamacare was a troll-bill that they loved passing around because it made for great sound-bytes.
The Republicans were a farce of a party long before Trump got here.

Depends on who you ask. Ask a Teapublican, they wanted a complete deregulation of Health Care and they didn't want Government in it at all. Ask a Moderate, they wanted a good Health Care Replacement that minimized Government involvement but made sure people were protected the 'Conservative way'. Ask Ryan and Trump's Faction, they wanted a Win against the last 8 Years, a Win that would cement their way as the 'right' way, and it didn't matter if it was Wrong or Bad, they just wanted a Win.
In the end, only the United Democratic Front got what they wanted: To keep Obamacare as the law of the land for as long as possible, without the opposing side just wanting it to be killed off.

I'm getting an impression that it's another one of those "perfect is the enemy of good" situations.
Do not obey in advance.
