Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

We'll certainly see. One thing's for certain: this vote's going to be an establishing moment no matter which way it goes.
Either this is the vote that shatters a major foundation of Trump's presidency, or it's the one that proves once and for all that Republican talk is cheap; they will always bow to their Trumpenfuhrer.
Trump surely knows it too. It's why he's pushing for the vote against Ryan's better judgment. He wants the Teapublicans to prove whether they actually have the spine they claim they do.

Since then absolutely no blame could be deflected to Congress. It would be Trump and Trump alone who caused millions of Americans to lose their coverage and millions more unable to afford any.

x5:That would get struck down — E Os can't override legislation willy nilly.
EDIT: An entire
school, tho.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Don't forget that Tom Price is the HHS Secretary. Much of the ACA's goals were accomplished through administrative action, and, according to the AJC's sources, Price is actually competent at his job, i.e. using bureaucratic machinery to undo the ACA as much as executive power allows.

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesI don't imagine Ryancare passing is going to do much good for their popularity anyways. Their "victory" will just be marked by people complaining about where their health care went, and they won't be able to point fingers at anyone because it's their bill, they were the ones droning on and on about it for years and now they have to deal with the consequences.
It's lose-lose for the Republicans, but obviously we don't want people getting fucked over with no insurance so it not passing is for the best.

I'm not hoping that the GOP's constituency gets hammered with the ramifications of AHCA passing, even if it would be karmically delicious. For one, there would be too much collateral damage; for another, it's not what America is supposed to be about.
We shouldn't cheer on bad bills passing into law just because it will show up how awful the people who wrote them are.
Edit: I wonder if Ryan thinks about how he badmouthed Trump every time he goes to him for instructions like an obedient puppy dog.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"On AI supplanting human jobs: "it's not even on our radar screen.... 50-100 more years" away. "I'm not worried at all" about robots displacing humans in the near future, he said, adding: "In fact I'm optimistic."
Other big ticket items:
Trump:
Trump's stamina: "He's got perfect genes. He has incredible energy and he's unbelievably healthy."
Trump's diet: Mnuchin claimed Trump no longer eats KFC or Mc Donald's, as the White House food is "great."
The dollar bill: "I think we should look at putting President Trump on the thousand dollar bill."
Trump's views evolving: "He's the negotiator-in-chief... he wants big deals."
Trump's leadership style: "He has an open door. People are coming and going, and he thinks about something and calls somebody on the phone... this is not a formal, scheduled president."
Tax reform:
"Much simpler" than health care reform, saying the Trump administration will do it comprehensively. Not going to break it up into more passable pieces.
Corporate tax rate: Mnuchin declined to reiterate Trump's goal of a 15% corporate tax rate, vs. Ryan's 20% plan.
Carried interest loophole: Mnuchin said the loophole will be closed in our tax plan. But that's for hedge funds. No commitment on real estate, etc.
Border adjustment tax: It has certain aspects that are VAT-like, which much of the rest of the world uses.
The focus of tax cuts: Mnuchin said the Trump administration's focus is on tax cuts for the middle class, not upper.
The global economy:
Renegotiating trade deals: "So long as we can renegotiate [trade] deals that are good for us, we won't be protectionist. Otherwise we will."
The one bad thing: We don't know how to predict the next bad thing.
'''Trump's big objective: Keep people safe, per Mnuchin. Does Mnuchin worry about who is calling Trump? "No. Do you?"'''

Hey, Steve. You have something on your nose.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"For everyone else, well there was no logical reason to wipe with dollar bills before that comes to pass...
And in all seriousness, a thousand dollar bill with Trump's face on it, might be the perfect Never Forget what led us here symbol.

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our lives$1,000 bills aren't even in circulation. It would be perfect irony for his face to go on something that nobody ever gets to have.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Reusing a crack I made in a completely different context elsewhere on the forum a couple days ago, because it's just as applicable here:
Steve Mnuchin has his nose so far up Trump's ass that I'm half-convinced he's searching for smuggled cocaine.
