Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

wait, so the vote already happened for the Trump Care? what were the results?

I'm afraid I can't explain myself, sir. Because I am not myself, you see?So, from the sounds of it, Trumpcare is dead in the water. There is no conceivable way it could possibly garner enough votes to actually pass. Everyone hates it, it is clearly stupid, and no one in their right mind would ever vote for it.
Given recent history, I think this means it's going to pass.

One of my state's (Republican) representatives is resistant to the ACHA, stating he feels more time should be taken to get it done right than get it done fast. It should also be noted he rated Trump as "magnificent" during that private meeting and is credited for helping create the Freedom Caucus (is that just a new name of the Tea Party?)
Obama made a statement yesterday about the ACA's anniversary:

Those are the Tea Party members in the House; the Freedom Caucus is their own little clique, essentially.

Currently, there are 34 Republicans saying 'no' and 18 Republicans leaning 'no' (the numbers may have slightly changed since yesterday). Republicans can only afford to have 21 members saying 'no', as it expected that 0 Democrats will say 'yes'. The minute a 22nd Republican votes 'no', Ryancare is dead.
Seems Ryan is in proper panic mode now.
The president and the speaker faced the humiliating prospect of a major defeat on legislation promised for seven years, since the landmark health legislation was signed into law. President Trump had demanded a vote regardless, which has been scheduled for Friday afternoon. But House leaders were leaning against such a public loss.
The House opened debate Friday on what could be one of the most consequential pieces of legislation in years, a bill that could roll back a major, established social welfare program, a feat that is almost unheard of.
Constant vigilance! Zero complacency! Keep fighting until the battle is actually won!
If we take anything away from the 2016 election, that should be it.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I half expect Trump is trying to push this to vote despite Ryan's urgings against it because he wants to see how many Republicans fall in line. It's a test of Congressional loyalty to him.
He's done this over and over. It's basically his one and only poker strategy. No matter what he's holding in his hand, he just keeps raising the bet until everyone else folds.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I slightly feel sorry for Ryan, but at the same time, I honestly feel that, not only should Ryancare die, Ryan himself should lose his Speakership. Ryan went about this so badly that I can't think he should have such an important position. He's clearly not the leading type. I understand that the pressures of both the Teapublicans and Trump got to him, but that just makes it worse: That he can't stand up to people both above and below him. Boehner, for all his faults, was able to tell the Teapublicans 'no' from time to time (or at least, that's what I remember). Ryan is beholden to all these factions and can't stand up for himself. His spinelessness, and the way he did everything so so wrong when it came to this bill, should get him to leave for someone who can 'do better'... for the next year, until Pelosi retakes the Speakership.

Ryan devoted his entire speakership around the concept of repealing the ACA. If he can't command a majority for that piece of legislation, he honestly should resign, since his brain is empty of pretty much everything else.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."I think Trump has basically the same opinion of the Republicans that speak out against him as we do: it's all just empty talk and they'll fall in line when pushed.
So when a GOP congressman is like, "This is outrageous and I will absolutely vote against party on this," Trump's response is to go, "Oh, will you now? LOOK WE'RE HAVING A VOTE. Time to put up or shut up: whose side are you on?"

That might've worked in the past, but the Teapublicans are absolutely nuts and almost always serious. They will not vote with their party if they think a deal is bad. And a lot of Teapublicans think this deal is bad.

I can agree with that, at the very least.
