Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Here's a rundown of what happened this week:
- The Trump-Russia Congressional investigation began: The head of the FBI and NSA both admitted that a)Trump's wiretap allegations were false and b)they've been investigating Trump and Russia since July. Adam Schiff (D-Cali) says there is now Evidence on the Trump-Russia ties that is no longer 'coincidental'.
- Devin Nunes (R-Cali) revealed to the Press and the President that the CIA had recorded Trump and Trump staffer calls incidentally, but they had nothing to do with either the wiretap allegations or Trump-Russia ties. Of course, Trump and the Trumpeteer Media believed that that proved Trump was right with his tweets, even though he wasn't. Nunes had to specifically say multiple times that it didn't prove Trump right. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz) and several Democrats condemned Nunes' move, and Nunes had to apologize twice over what he did.
- Ryancare/Trumpcare/RepublicansDon'tCare is in danger of failing: The vote yesterday, on the 7th Birthday of Obamacare, was delayed because Teapublicans and Moderates were balking at it. In response, Trump has forced Congress to vote for it today, despite the fact that there aren't enough votes to pass the law. There are currently 30+ Republicans who have definitively said they will not vote for Ryancare in it's current form, and Republicans can only afford to have 21 no's from their party. Trump has threatened that if Ryancare isn't passed, then Obamacare will stay and be enforced.
- Paul Manafort, Trump's former Campaign Manager, has been revealed to have been working directly for Russia since 2005.
There may have been other important things that happened this week, but those are absolutely the most important things this week.

An Alien Invasion would be put on hold as they debate their next course of action:
"Okay, on the one tentacle, if we wait long enough, they won't be able to put up a fight. They might even welcome us with open arms. On the other tentacle, if we wait too long, there won't be anything left worth taking."
"Ugh, taking Alpha Centauri wasn't nearly this annoying."
Disgusted, but not surprisedTrump won, so there's hell toupée.

Or they debate between destroying us (on the off chance we get into space before we ruin our only biosphere) and recruiting us.
CNN just broke that the Republicans have cancelled the open House hearing on Russian election meddling. No link yet.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.
x4"if we wait long enough?" I for one welcome our alien overlords right now. (Just don't be ants. "Hail Ants" its already taken).
In all seriousness as to what happened. There was a report that went through the media's handling of the election and deconstructed several myths about the events. Have to hunt through the archives to find it.
EDIT: Nevermind. Found it: The Real Story of 2016

Woah woah WOAH! Does that mean they found something? Are they trying to hide something from the public to protect Trump?!
Then again, without a source, I don't want to jump the gun.
Speaking of the Trump-Russia Investigation, Paul Manafort is willing to testify according to Nunes.
How much money do you wanna bet he'll sell out Trump to save his own ass?
More details: its the Manafort hearing that will happen, but will be closed to the public.

It might just be them being cautious.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Mr. Trump appeared almost oblivious to the dire situation unfolding in the hours after he hosted a meeting with members of the House Freedom Caucus at the White House, where he made the case Mr. Winston pointed to — that not passing the health bill risks the rest of the Republican agenda.
In the midafternoon, a beaming Mr. Trump climbed into the rig of a black tractor-trailer, which had been driven to the White House for an event with trucking industry executives, honking the horn and posing for a series of tough-guy photos — one with his fists held aloft, another staring straight ahead, hands gripping the large wheel, his face compressed into an excited scream.
At a meeting inside shortly after that, Mr. Trump announced that he was pressed for time and needed to go make calls for more votes.
A reporter informed him that the vote had already been called off.
Our Commander in Chief, folks.
Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R- New J.), chair of the House Appropriations Committee, vowed on Friday he would not vote for Trumpcare.
This is seen as a major setback to the vote.
I'm holding Mr. Frelinghuysen to his word.
I like to think that after the reporter told him the vote was called off, he spent several seconds Blue Screening, then start screaming, "FAKE NEWS" at the reporter while running as fast as his legs could carry him back inside to see if it was true.
