Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Politifact and the Trump Time interview
"What have I said that is wrong?" Trump asked.

As I said, the irony of the most extreme Republicans blocking the plan that would harm their constituents because they don't think it's harmful enough is superlative.
Trump literally doesn't understand the concept of truth as external to his own statements. Whatever he says is true because he said it.
Apparently there's a video that goes into detail about the Deaths of Despair report
All-male White House health bill photo sparks anger
But the lack of women here, among a group of conservative Republicans discussing their healthcare bill with the vice-president, struck a particular nerve.
That's because one of the points under discussion was whether the new bill should mandate that health insurance plans provide "essential benefits" including maternity services.
the reaction was swift when Vice-President Mike Pence tweeted the photo, with the words: "Appreciated joining @POTUS for meeting with the Freedom Caucus again today This is it. #Pass The Bill"
Democratic Senator Patty Murray was one of the first to respond, making an ironic observation. "A rare look inside the GOP's women's health caucus"
...the US Congress as a whole is still dominated by men.
With 20% female, the US ranks alongside Bangladesh in global terms. In Sweden it's 44%.
Conservatives have long wanted to reverse an Obamacare requirement that all health plans include 10 key benefits, including emergency services, drug use treatment and maternity care.
It has led some people to question why they are paying for services they say they do not need - like pediatric care for people who have no intention of having children.
Republican Senator Pat Roberts expressed that view on Thursday, when asked about the negotiations, saying: "I wouldn't want to lose my mammograms."
He later tweeted an apology: "I deeply regret my comments on a very important topic. Mammograms are essential to women's health & I never intended to indicate otherwise."
To move away from Trump for a second, do we have any information on the primaries for this year's gubernatorial races? Both Virginia and New Jersey are open seats so both parties need to produce candidates.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran@Euo, cause no one here is a trained psychologist with access to the person in question and using clinical terms without a foundation beyond "this seems to fit" in an Armchair Diagnosis form in this vein is somewhat casually ableist. Hence the discouragement of the practice.
It also implies that Trump's behaviour is not because he's an ass but must be because he's mentally ill, which goes into the same issues, cause it implies causality between the two.

"You can reply to this Message!"For 2017, I can't help. But for the 2018 decision in Georgia, the AJC has a list of potential contenders.
It's impossible to quoteblock any meaningful excerpt from it.
That said, the vote's in 2018, but the race has already started. Both Caglenote and Abramsnote have already started gearing up, and Yates, Kempnote , and Evansnote may end up throwing down the gauntlet too. There may also be a rerun of Carter, but that just seems like a bad omen.

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesObviously, they will be biased, but even taking out 10% for bias, that's still a lot and could easily kill those reps chances next year.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Retaking the Senate in 2018 will be very difficult for the Dems, they'd have to make gains in deep red states that are normally out of reach, while protecting gains that had previously been made in deep red states.

They wanted a strongman, not a clown.
Disgusted, but not surprised
