Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

NPR: The Forces Driving Middle-Aged White People's 'Deaths Of Despair'
Basically, mortality rates in middle aged whites are rising. One study believes that the increasing death rates is due to "despair" brought on by reduced labor force participation, marriage rates, and poorer physical and mental health.
The comments section is understandably filled with small violins being strung and playing songs mocking "economic anxiety" and "despair".
I have previously brought up the idea of universal online ID in the Privacy and Surveillance topic
, and it's a discussion better held there.
Yes, it would require essentially redesigning the Internet, although I don't know how much of that would be at the hardware level. Frankly, as far as trust goes, I see less to fear in one institution that acts as the master repository of online personal information than millions of small institutions, with a wide array of security practices and capabilities.
Look at it this way... if a hacker were to break into such a master system, how would they make use of what they found there? The reason an attacker can (for example) make use of your credit card information to conduct fraudulent transactions is that the identity information and the transaction information are managed by different entities. If the only allowable arbiter of transactions is the master system, masquerading as it would be impossible. But this is off-topic and I'd rather not discuss it here.

Would the intent discussion perhaps be suited to the old (unopened) internet culture thread? I know that I've been wanting to talk about limiting internet anarchy for a long time, but we've never had a good topic for it.

Even Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz) says the Disclosure 'very disturbing', not because of it's contents, but because he disclosed anything during an investigation at all.

They'll try, but it will be stupid. Republicans hold both houses of Congress and the White House. They're in what is basically the worst situation imaginable for them, because when their policies keep failing, there's no one to pass the buck to. Buck stops at the GOP. They're the only ones in power.
Many of their voters have long believed that the GOP would fix the nation and ring in a glorious era if those crooked Dems didn't keep getting in the way. This narrative is what's kept them in power in the first place. Now the party has to put up or shut up, because it's out of excuses.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. They can try all they like but it won't work on a lot of people. There is simply a reasonable sized segment of the population who think that the president is responsible for everything that goes on, I don't think the Republicans even created the phenomenon, it's always been there.

One could observe that the Democrats acted similarly when they had control of the White House and Congress. it's much easier to be unified against something than for something.
@That NPR article: It's incredibly myopic to call such a large rise in mortality rates something worthy of a "world's smallest violin" response.
I didn't realize it had gotten that bad, but it sounds like mortality rates for whites without a college degree have surpassed overall death rates for African Americans and are currently on track to surpass the mortality rate of blacks without a college degree if current trends continue.
It's worth noting that working class whites are pretty much all alone in terms of the trend of their life expectancy, AFAIK basically every other bloc is experiencing rising life expectancy. T His goes against the past century's general trend of rising life expectancies across the board.
Is it any wonder these people seem to be getting radicalized quite easily?

Not sure if that's necessarily true. The 111th Congress passed so many bills and legislation, that I'm positive 75% of them went completely under the radar except for a few excerpts on page six of the NYT.
How Nancy Pelosi pulled off the ACA I'll never truly understand.
Truly the definition of a goddamn Miracle.
New Survey coming this weekend!![]()
But their radicalization is almost entirely their own fault. How many times can we extend the olive branch to come out of their bubble of imagined lost privilege before we decide it's not worthwhile?

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The thing is, we're already doing everything we can for them. They're fighting to stop us. Yes, it's a tragedy on an individual level. No one's going to point at a suicide or a drug overdose and say "good, you deserved it, it's your own fault anyway". But when they're demanding help which we've been trying to get them for years and they've been soundly rejecting it while calling ever-more-loudly for help, at some point you have to throw up your hands in exasperation.
I agree that the "world's smallest violin" comments are a dick move, but I can understand the feeling behind them, and it's not just schadenfreude or "fuck you, got mine".

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.![]()
If anything it's the opposite of "Fuck you, got mine". People in cities and blue states have access to significantly more knowledge, culture, and economic opportunities. They're trying to share these benefits with the rural areas but they keep getting insulted and pushed away.

Shouldn't this discussion go to another thread for Internet security instead?
