Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Sanders would have made a somewhat better President than Clinton, yet Clinton would have been an order of magnitude better than Trump. The DNC did not play fair by favoring Clinton over Sanders in the primaries, but Sanders himself set that aside and supported Clinton afterward, and so should we. Clinton's "corruption" is primarily her suppressing information in an apparent attempt to cover a variety of scandals. She simply screwed up with the email server thing, she violated the rules but not in any major way, but she knew more than she admitted. There's some smoke there, but not much fire.
All of which is water under the bridge. The fight now is against Trump and the Republican Congress. Anyone who helps to resist their agenda, regardless of party or alignment, is on our side. Anyone who doesnt isnt. Pretty simple.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.![]()
Well if your talking about pure governing ability and experience, then no, Clinton would have made a much better President then Sanders and I say that as someone who supported Sanders.
That being said I find all of the time that's been spent tearing down Sanders and his more nasty supporters seems pretty counter-productive.
Manafort is definitely going to jail. Anyone thinking that Devin Nune's 'trying to redeem Trump' move was a desperate attempt to make people ignore this news?
This seems like a pretty fucking huge deal to me.

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonTrump will just pardon him. It is a waste of time going after any of his cronies while he's still sitting in the big kahuna chair.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Trump's last ditch effort to get Republicans to say 'yes' to Ryancare is winning certain members of the Freedom Caucus over.
He invited 18 Teapublicans to the White House, had Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) sit in Mike Pence's seat, and told them one by one 'why can't you support this bill?' This has made Trump force Ryan to put certain things in the Bill, including an amendment that makes sure only American Citizens can get Healthcare Tax Credits, and deregulating the Healthcare Industry.
It's still to be seen if it will actually pass the House, but I wouldn't be surprised if it does. It's the Senate that I don't think Trump could do this stunt with any success.
a gambling website is seeking help for making Trump-related bets
Also according to the Washington Post
, the WSJ had presented a scathing and well-deserved opinion piece
about him and his credibility after apparently pulling punches with him.

The reverse is also true. A Democratic President can limit Congress' bullcrap.
Continue writing our story of peace. If we can get over the gerrymandering and voting suppression.

Continue writing our story of peace.
The Voter Suppression will be hard to get over, but the Gerrymandering won't be: If enough people who would normally vote Republican just vote Democrat because they're tired of the Republicans or of Trump, it won't matter how the districts are shaped in their favor, they won't win. Look at the new Governor of North Carolina as an example. Combined with at least 4 States having to redraw (some of or all of) their districts for violating Districting laws, and Trump's massive unpopularity, Democrats should be a shoe in to at least reclaim the House.
Gerrymandering is absolutely a potential problem.
And making solid predictions about how the mid-terms will go this far in advance is foolish. Historical data suggests it's basically a coin flip, with the dems at a slight advantage, but there's an enormous margin of error on that a lot can happen in two years that could shift things.
Remember the Carrier deal that would supposedly reduce job losses
? Well, those folks are losing their jobs after all.
Funny how the people complaining about free trade seem to gloss over the effects of automation...
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot
Free trade has its upsides and downsides, but it isn't nearly the job-killer too many people seem to believe it is. At least, not compared to automation. Automation is worse.
For me at least, the problem with free trade agreements has less to do with the actual free trade itself and more to do with the rest of the policies included in said agreements. Example: TPP's internet copyright bullshit.

Disgusted, but not surprised![]()
Without trade, most of the rubes that love protectionism would have no purchasing power. Costs would be ridiculous. Trade puts food on shelves year round; automation takes jobs.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."

I just read through the AMA because Virginia is one of the states I'm thinking about moving to after graduation. I like this guy. If I do move out there I'm definitely going to register to vote for him.
