Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I don't think Counterpunch is really a source we want to cite here.

Ah, okay.
If I recall, they have a history of anti-Semitism, yes? Part of me wonders if such accusations are an attempt of sorts to paint Sanders as "militant Zionist", or whatever they call their dogwhistles.

From what I can tell, it's an easy form of bigotry to work into your politics, as there are stereotypes associated with groups that both sides hate - bankers and war hawks for the Left, and Hollywood for the Right.
Again we see the importance of intersectionality in progressivism. I'm still shocked that a lot of people are apparently willing to leave anti-Semitism off of their list of bigotries to fight against.

Oh God! Natural light!I mean when you look at Hollywood and how it's supposed to be this bastion of liberalness and their rhetoric and then compare that with their movies and how they make decisions, they start looking hypocritical.
Same with Silicon Valley which I've read is filled with the alt-right despite the appearances they put on.
Malcolm X used to always talk about how the white liberal(fox) is actually more dangerous than the white conservative(wolf) because the former is trying to make you trust them and lull you to sleep before they eat you alive while the latter makes it clear they want to eat you. Not saying that I agree with him but that was his line of thinking.
Probably for the same reason a lot of people believe the Civil Rights Movement solved racism forever.
Once somewhere between 6 and 12 million people of your faith were systematically worked to death or put to death in camps, suddenly people can't be jerks to you on the basis of your faith. After all, you have a state now!

A better analogy might involve an animal that somehow manages to trick itself into thinking that it actually really likes and respects its prey and wants to help it...before messily devouring it.
Trouble is, I can't really think of any animals who are capable of that sort of self-delusion, aside from humans.

Oh God! Natural light!I mean it's different today since you can't be as forthcoming about racism as you could back then. The Republican Party today are now more like wolves trying out fox-like tactics but can't help from trying to devour you the second you put them in power.
Taking a thing from a few pages ago:
I think you have it flipped.
@Populism: I wish to extend anyone who believes it to be a good idea an invitation to come live in any South American country. Venezuela should be perfect for this, but Argentina or Brazil could work depending on how things go in these few years.
EDIT: oh, and Mad Skillz, since you said the primaries should favor the winners of swing states, here's a map of who won each state
. Green's Bernie, gold's Hillary.

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVSo the FBI did in fact wiretap Trump Tower. But not because Obama told them to.
But because of suspected Russian Mafia money laundering in 2013
Our sovereignty is fucking compromised lol

Did anyone checked this up now?

The Russian mob was operating out of Trump Tower?
How many sketchy connections to Russia does the guy need before it warrants a full investigation? This is getting ridiculous.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub."Doesn't matter. Like I've said before, it doesn't matter what you put on your platform if you're not seen as trustworthy and you know Bernie may have pulled her to the left but their policies weren't identical. And their rhetoric was different . Hillary didn't really rail against companies, she didn't talk crap about free trade agreements, she wasn't offering universal education or the federal legalization of marijuana as far as I know. She wasn't a populist."
Populism can die in a fire. The people are a mass of slavering morons who cannot be directly catered to without inviting disaster. What we needed was intelligent, technocratic leadership, not rabble-rousing. Honestly, if a person needs to be lied to and promised federal marijuana legalization in a country where the political leadership will never see it happen, free education in a system where universities are more interested in securing fat contracts for football coaches, and the scrapping of trade agreements that are the only thing giving American consumers the bulk of their purchasing power, all so that they don't vote in a complete moron, they may as well just not vote; they're killing good government.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."
Put in a slightly less incendiary manner (hint, hint), Quality by Popular Vote has almost never given us good policy. Most positive social and political changes in history have been pushed through against the will of the majority, who only discovered they liked it after the fact.

The name Teflon Don might be the only thing he ever earned. When you're that much of a [REDACTED], expectations tend to fall. The news story that breaks him among supporters may be when Breaking News: We caught Trump on tape being a decent human being!
But on all things Moscow-ward Trump ex-aide Paul Manafort 'offered to help Putin'
Paul Manafort is said to have proposed a strategy to nullify anti-Russian opposition across former Soviet republics a decade ago.
AP says documents and interviews support its claims about Mr Manafort.
Mr Manafort has insisted that he never worked for Russian interests.
He resigned after AP revealed that he had co-ordinated a secret Washington lobbying operation on behalf of Ukraine's ruling pro-Russian political party until 2014.
Newly obtained business records link Mr Manafort more directly to Mr Putin's interests in the region, AP says.
Mr Manafort is said to have pitched the plans to aluminium magnate Oleg Deripaska, a close ally of President Putin.
In a statement to AP, Mr Manafort confirmed that he had worked for Mr Deripaska in several countries but insisted the work was being unfairly cast as "inappropriate or nefarious" as part of a "smear campaign".
"I worked with Oleg Deripaska almost a decade ago representing him on business and personal matters in countries where he had investments," Mr Manafort said in the statement.
"My work for Mr Deripaska did not involve representing Russian political interests.''
A spokesman for Mr Deripaska in Moscow declined to answer questions from AP.

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesSo I don't know what the rules (if any,) here are about posting petitions, and I'm not expecting anyone to sign it, but this got me so fucking pissed that I had to post it here. Apparently, the Tibet Women's Soccer Team has been denied access to the US for the Dallas Cup tournament on account of them having 'no good reason' to be there.
And I'm pretty sure Tibet isn't even included in the damn travel ban. Is this going to be our policy going forward? Blocking everyone from every foreign country just because we can? (And did I really have to ask?
)
God I miss the Soviet Union. Russia becoming capitalist and open to the international community destroyed us. Now we're surrounded by traitorous filth, and there's nothing we can do about it.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."

The funny thing is that the NRA consistently gives Bernie and other relativly pro-gun left wingers extremely low marks (Bernie never ranked above C- and usually got an F) while right-wingers with similar or identical voting records on gun issues got high marks consistently.
