Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well, the stupid keeps coming. And it shows how the groupthink causes anyone inside the movement who calls out its hypocrisy to be excommunicated.
"Authentic and unfiltered voices" — that's like a dictatorship calling itself a "democratic republic".

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"^^ I can't be too sympathetic to one who calls out hypocrisy only when it negatively impacts them personally, while otherwise happily swimming in the bullshit pool. Because, wouldn't you know it, that makes them a hypocrite.
Again.
See also my lukewarm reaction whenever Megyn Kelly takes shots at the rest of Fox News for their misogyny.
Republicans only tolerate women when they believe entirely in the party line and do what they are told. As much as the Republican party wallows in misogyny, a big portion of that is internalized misogyny among women and the utter lack of self awareness-a solid counterpoint to the toxic masculinity the GOP loves to enshrine as the "Ideal".
Not quite two sides of the same coin, but definitely cut from the same line of thinking.

We can't be too rough on the people who try to escape from the groupthink. Rather, we should welcome their original thought and encourage more of it. How else can we ever hope to reach anyone? We certainly don't want to drive them back in, Heel–Face Door-Slam style.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I can't help but hope that Tomi Lahren's suspension isn't the end of her problems. She's repeatedly denied the existence of MRAs, alt-right trolls, etc. For her to get attacked by them now would be a pretty perfect comeuppance for all she's said and done. It would also demonstrate to her that this is a real problem, and maybe help to push her out of the echo chamber. Though given what she's like I wouldn't hold my breath.
In some good-but-out-of-a-screwed-up-situation news...
A man who sent Trump-critical journalist Kurt Eichenwald a tweet of a GIF
with flashing lights has been charged.
Eichenwald is epileptic and it's entirely possible this was intended to kill him.
In short, Trump got him fired, because he got the idea of Britain helping Obama from Napolitano.
The Conservative/Neocon circus is on fire and Trump continues to pour Gasoline on it.
NYT: Fewer Americans would be covered under GOP health plan than by straight repeal
So in other words, if you simply just repealed the ACA and did nothing afterwards, the amount of people insured would be HIGHER than if the Republican replacement bill passed.
New Survey coming this weekend!Trump's meeting with Republicans on Ryancare was filled with threats from the President
. He threatened anyone that said no, specifically Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), he would 'go after them'. No one actually took him seriously, though, and most of those already saying 'no' are still saying 'no' to Ryancare. He also said that if Ryancare wasn't passed, that the Republican Majority would be swept away in 2018.
The continued Self-Cannibalization of the Republican Party continues.
Looks like the rider wars are starting for Trumpcare in the House:
- Mo Brooks (R-Al): Repeal entirety of Obamacare.
- Glenn Grothman (R-Wi): reduce dependency extension age to 23 from 26.
- Daniel Lipinski (D-Il) remove insurer tax deductions for executive pay provision.
FBI Reportedly Looking At Breitbart, InfoWars As Part Of Russia Probe
.
Hey, Tobias, didn't you once speculate maybe Bannon is the liaison between Trump and Putin?
EDIT: NRA has links to Russia too
. No one told me Winter Soldier was a documentary.

With that in mind.
US TV host Tomi Lahren 'suspended over pro-choice comments'
Ms Lahren has faced huge online backlash since speaking on ABC's "The View" last week.
Ms Lahren said: "I'm someone that is for limited government, so I can't sit here and be a hypocrite and say I'm for limited government, but I think that the government should decide what women do with their bodies.
"Stay out of my guns, and you can stay out of my body as well."
Ms Lahren has since defended her comments on Twitter, saying: "I speak my truth. If you don't like it, tough."
Reports suggest her show may now be cut altogether, amid rising tensions between Ms Lahren and other Blaze employees and hosts.
The network's founder Glenn Beck has spoken out again Ms Lahren and another reporter Kaitlyn Schallhorn, tweeted: "Even Hillary Clinton didn't call pro-life conservatives hypocrites."
The conservative network describes itself as "a platform for a new generation of authentic and unfiltered voices".
Ms Lahren has 4.3 million followers on her Facebook page, almost 3 million more than President Donald Trump himself.
I just hope the bold says it all. Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our lives
