The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] this is the same Comey who publicly announced investigation of Hillary Clinton was back on days before the election.

Apparently whatever's going on is enough to prompt a tweetstorm.

Although for one: "What about all of the contact with the Clinton campaign and the Russians? Also, is it true that the DNC would not let the FBI in to look?" Couldn't he just ask the FBI? Or are they not on speaking terms anymore.

[up][up] No, my point is that I'd be very shocked if he rats out Trump, because for starters his organization has a fair number of Trump loyalists in it compared to the CIA, and secondly his ass is grass under any President other than Trump after the stunt he pulled.

[up] My impression is that he's simply looking out for his own hide; he's very likely to go down with the Trump administration if it ends with impeachment, but there's a difference of degrees; going too far in support of the Trump administration might see him lose his freedom as well as his job under a different President.

So the FBI knew about this since July.

But somehow only the DAMN EMAILS were considered important?

I'm hearing that Comey basically said there was no evidence for Trump's Wiretapping Claims.

I called it a week ago; that that week extension only let them hold onto their "We don't have evidence, sorry" excuse, not finding anything that would actually prove it.

[down] And arrest Fox News Journalists and "Conservative" Talk Show Hosts? If Comey understands the implications of what they want, he would be very careful with his wording...

I mean Mao thought the USSR was an imperial power hiding behind a socialist facade.

Why are we citing Mao on anything? The man murdered 60 million of his own people, and repeatedly engaged in the promotion of Communist revolution worldwide, thus enabling the deaths of more people, but he's getting cited as someone who recognized and called out imperialism?

If you want to convince people you're not some kind of crazed revolutionary, maybe don't cite one of the twentieth century's worst mass murderers as an authority on anything.

[up] Mao was a textbook case of why left wing populism can be just as fucked up as right wing populism. His war against sparrows (I shit you not) was particularly dumb.

[up][up][up] Perhaps, though that reeks of the golden mean fallacy which is essentially the entire raison d'etre of the so called cult of centrism. The circumstances which produces Mao Zedong were very different from those which exist in the modern United States or could plausibly exist in the forseeable future; left wing populism in the United States has historically been extremely moderate, and that's still the case today in my current assessment because, beyond the chest beating and the fiery rhetoric, there's a general understanding among the progressive wing that there has to be some level of cooperation with the centrist democrats to achieve anything meaningful, excluding of course the handful of people who voted green in a state that was actually competitive.

[up] The left wing doesn't want to cooperate with the centrists. They want to strong-arm them into doing everything they say with the threat of primarying them into permanent electoral impotence. At least, that's what the so-called "Justice Democrats" are attempting.

Cooperation with centrist Democrats: I'll believe it when TYT staple guns their mouths shut.

[up][up] The median opinion of the American left in my reckoning is more an expectation that cooperation with the center will be on our terms rather than theirs. I am not personally in favor of playing hardball because of the long term damages, and I suspect a great many people who are currently trying that particular tactic would stand down if such a compromise were to be reached.

[up] When it came down to it, for all the shit they talked they all (with the exception of Dore I think, though I don't even watch their show so this is all second hand) voted for Clinton and advised their viewers to do the same for reasons that should be obvious. As I said, past the chestbeating and firebrand rhetoric, the majority of people on the left, even some of the more contrarian types like the TYT crowd are prepared to compromise when push comes to shove.

If they want centrists to cooperate with them on their terms, they need to fucking cool it with the "EVIL CORPORATE DINO" rhetoric. They also need to shut the fuck up about how "HRC WAS A WEAK CANDIDATE! BERNIE WOULD HAVE WON! CORRUPT DNC RIGGED THE PRIMARIES!" Oh, and they should also drop that homophobic tankie Assad apologist Gabbard like a hot potato and put a damn muzzle on that conspiracy nut Canova.

I'm not a fan of Sanders, but damn I feel bad for him being associated with these idiots.

[up] If you look hard enough, you can find unsavory people in any political sphere because the nature of politics strongly favors ruthless opportunists and cynical hangers-on; I don't think people like Tim Canova, much less Tulsi Gabbrand represent the mean opinion of the left in America. I barely see either of them mentioned in contrast to people like Elizabeth Warren, Keith Ellison, and Sanders himself being held up as progressive heroes.

I'm not super fond of centrism in the Democrats because I live in a conservative hellhole and the further the political window shifts from the left the further into regressive madness my state falls.
