The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

And Trump would have to go to her funeral and say some words if she dies while he's still in office.

I reiterate my question.

Because the crazy, violent assholes like Trump.

We are not the party of "Gonna get my gun and kill some f*cks until the world is sane again." Heavens willing, we never will be.

A secret service laptop is missing. the content include evacuation plans for Trump Tower. As well as the pins that allowed access to security details meant to protect Trump, Clinton, Pope Francis and the United Nations General Assembly.

The House of Represntatives (of Hell) is planning to repeal much of Obamacare Thursday. One can only hope a Democrat filibuster is possible.

and one news site claims that the Republicans had split into 3 factions. The Tea Party, Chamber of Commerce, and the Steven Bannon Populists.

We have a BBC news article asking if Republicans forgot to Govern. (its from last night so if that has been brought up before, I apologize)

Regarding that last one, I want to know how possible would replacing the GOP by a different party be?

"Regarding that last one, I want to know how possible would replacing the GOP by a different party be?"

They wouldn't split until Republicans started running insurgent general election campaigns. The GOP is too regimented for that.

[up][up] I wouldn't know. I presume to that the Bannon populists (described as the most recent group mentioned in the article) would be the darkest in your question.

Trump’s budget would cut funding for Appalachia. This will hurt coal country

I really just can't give a shit. If only they voted for the candidate who actually had ideas on how to help them. Oh well, the Rust Belt will reap what the sow.

[up][up][up] He does that, he guarantees West Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky not only go Blue, but go full on Justice Democrat/Sanderista/Socialist in 2018. Trump can not screw over these State's that need money to either support their crumbling Coal Mining Industries, or to transition away from Coal, without massive backlash.

Need a bit more than that to make these states blue. If the evil dog singlehandedly shuts down all coal mines there, then you may see such a thing happening.

That's the nice thing about bubbled communities. When they get all their information from word of mouth originating at you, you can do whatever you want and never risk losing their votes.

All you have to do is shit on their lawn, then go, "Wow, did you see that black Muslim Democrat? Dude just shit on your lawn!"

The GOP has mastered the art of condemning their own practices in front of their constituents as the work of those wicked Dems.

Who else thinks that Merkel, being one of the few people in, more or less, equal standing to the US president, probably politely shut down any nonsense he tried to pull, did away with weasel words and talked straight politics with him? Most of which Trump, being Trump, couldn't comprehend?

Conversing with people who are clearly smarter than him and don't bother kissing his ass must be very infurating for him.

It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.

Here's the CNN article with the Pentagon's (unofficial) response to the alleged mosque strike. TL;DR is one sentence in the middle of the article - That building was 40 to 50 feet from the mosque, but recent satellite imagery shows the mosque still is standing, the official said.

One can only hope a Democrat filibuster is possible.
It's not. They're voting on it as a budget item, which has different rules for filibustering. (Before you break out the torches and pitchforks, the Democrats did the same thing to dodge GOP filibusters.)

However, there's a good chance that they won't have enough Republican votes to pass it regardless.

http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/324489-white-house-cites-satire-column-to-tout-budget

The White House included a satirical column in its list of news stories meant to promote Trump agenda — apparently ignoring the fact that the column actually savages Trump's new budget.

Friday’s edition of the “1600 Daily” highlighted a Washington Post article by humorist Alexandra Petri with a deceptively positive title: “Trump’s budget makes perfect sense and will fix America, and I will tell you why.”

But Petri's column is actually a brutal attack on Trump's proposed budget, with cuts domestic programs and the State Department while boosting the defense budget.

“Some people are complaining that the budget proffered by the Trump administration, despite its wonderful, macho-sounding name, is too vague and makes all sorts of cuts to needed programs in favor of increasing military spending by leaps and bounds,” she wrote Thursday. "These people are wimps.”

“America has been soft and weak for too long,” Petri added. "BUT HOW WILL I SURVIVE ON THIS BUDGET? you may be wondering. I AM A HUMAN CHILD, NOT A COSTLY FIGHTER JET. You may not survive, but that is because you are SOFT and WEAK, something this budget is designed to eliminate.”

To be fair (and I'm damning with faint praise here), a lot of studies have shown that most people will simply look at the title of an article before sharing it on social media. Hell, there's even sites devoted to allowing you to spoof a false headline in order to see how many of your friends actually pay enough attention to not get suckered in.

@Morning Star: Even if it passes the House, it then also has to pass the Senate to get to the president's desk, and there are signs that the Senate is much less eager to pass this particular form of the bill.
