Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The idea of "fandom" vs Goverment is patently ridiculous. The idea that there ought to be a relaxation on copyright laws didn't set anyone any more against the government than it already was. And "fandom" includes moderates and liberals as much as it does alt-right types, so using it as a measure of a group that organizes for political movement is foolish as best.
Also, really, anyone who voted for Trump based on their desire to protect fanwork was a fucking moron, even more so than usual. And yet somehow I doubt that anyone actually voted specifically for him for that specific issue. You're making a GIGANTIC FUCKING LEAP here with literally nothing to back that theory up.
Trump basically trashed the TPP by saying it took American jobs, and not on the basis of copyright, appealing to good old fashioned racism and economic fear rather than "My anime waifu!" bullshit.

Conservatives are armed as a matter of principle and paranoia?
Not sure if this is new or not to folks here but it popped up on my newsfeed so thought I'd share:
http://ktvl.com/news/local/oregon-lawmakers-debate-bill-that-could-affect-electoral-college
House Bill 2731 is an inter-state agreement that would require electors to vote for the presidential candidate that wins the popular vote. This is something the legislature has voted on before, but local political experts said there are constitutional challenges.
"No state shall enter into an agreement with another state without the approval of congress. Well this national popular vote project is an interstate compact," said Michael Torguson with Rogue Community College.
This agreement would not go into effect unless 271 electors are on board.
@sgamer82: We have discussed the popular vote initiative before-there is a website tracking which states have already signed on. Because it goes by electors, the initiative has to somehow flip either Texas or half the solid Red states, in addition to several purple ones to bring it online.

Concerning whether TPP's copyright stuff had any significant impact on the election...
Frankly, anyone who didn't vote for HRC solely based on this — never mind that she promised not to support TPP — is an idiot with Skewed Priorities. Especially since Trump being in favor of dismantling net neutrality would be far, far worse.

The government and big corporations, both Republican and Democrat, have been trying to control internet access and content since the internet became mainstream in the Early 2000's anyways. Remember the PATRIOT Act? At least having someone who is actually competent and intelligent would probably make the restrictions more lenient and less idiotic/greedy and annoying to have to work around. Not to mention right-wing populists tend to be in favor of censored/restricted internet to begin with, too. China, Russia and Turkey's internet restrictions should have showed people that, as well as the UK's recent internet laws. Why did they think Trump would be any different?

But he's an "outsider". He's anti-establishment!

Look up Roy Cohn some time. He was something of an Evil Mentor to Trump apparently. Though Fred Trump Sr. was also a piece of work.
Fred Trump was pretty monstrous morally, but he was trustworthy- well, the big banks and investors were willing to give him money. Donald's earliest deals came from his daddy, just like his million-dollar loans. Once Fred was no longer looking over Donald's shoulder, the large investors quickly stopped giving Trump their money. So I don't think Trump learned how to grift from Fred- only that if you want money, you need to find someone dumber than you are.
Yeah, indications are that if you made a deal with Fred Trump, he would usually try to stick to it. Because that makes people more willing to deal with you in the future, which makes it easier to learn about deals and to find people willing to partner with you.
Donald Trump's just cheap and completely lacks the concept of loyalty to anyone but himself.
Fred Trump Sr. was a pretty shitty human being — which almost certainly contributed to Donald's terrible personality — but apparently he was at least a competent and pragmatic businessman who understood the importance of trust between partners.
Fred Sr. being a terrible person and father can't be understated though — by all accounts he drove his older son Fred Jr. to drink himself to death.

That's a given. But that reason in particularly is just petty. I don't think Deviantart is more important than human rights or goddamn NATO.
