The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This guy says "not enough people in prison" is bad... Which sure shows they're making up crime to fill the prisons, not using the prisons as a crime deterrent.

The solution, Sessions said, is to “hammer” drug dealers and other criminals while bringing back the drug abstinence campaigns of the 1980s and 1990s.

Oh my god, Sessions wants to bring back those DARE commercials where Bugs Bunny tells you not to smoke. This is going to be so stupid and yet also maybe kind of funny. We may yet see a day where Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie are telling kids in 30-second spots that reefer is whack.

Who's up for an EDGY REBOOT of Reefer Madness? I'm sure Warner Bros. can procure the rights.

Also violent crime has been trending downward for the past decade or so. Seriously, where do these people get their numbers from?

He admitted crime was relatively low by historic standards but said it's coming back in a big way. Like it's back in fashion or something.

Trump says he learned he was 'wiretapped by Obama' from Fox News and the New York Times.

This man is so inept as a President. I can't imagine him winning another 4 years at this point, if he makes it through his first 4...

‘America is a white nation’: More racist fliers spotted at University of Maryland

White supremacist fliers were found Monday at the University of Maryland campus in College Park for the third time in three months, following similar incidents recently at universities across the country.

Two fliers were discovered outside the university’s chemistry department.

“It is your civic duty to report any and all illegal aliens,” one flier said. “They are criminals. America is a white nation.”

The other read: “Carry the torch of your people.” Fliers also were found at three other locations, according to the Diamondback student newspaper.

The fliers include a link to the website of Vanguard America, a group associated with the white supremacy movement. Leaders of the group weren’t immediately available for comment. The group was also linked to flier-posting incidents at the university in December.

Meh. Science is voodoo. That's what we voted on after all.
Friendly reminder: No, we didn't. We, as a nation voted against that and won by 2 percentage points (3 million votes). It was only due to an arcane system meant to give disproportionate power to the worst elements of our society that the current Unamerican, anti-science, anti-government, anti-economy, racist, sexist regime took power against the will of the people, not in accordance with it.

Hmm, perhaps violent crimes are on the rise because of a sudden spike in ultranationalism and white supremacy? I mean, if we broke down the numbers, I'm sure that the majority of the increase will be attributed to racial/political/anti-semitic motivated hate crimes.

The US does have a severe domestic terrorism problem...that no one wants to confront because it would either force people to accept that maybe letting everyone have guns isn't the most brilliant idea, or that the biggest threat to safety in the US is, statistically speaking, white men.

Ryancare barely gets out of the House's Budget Committee after 3 Teapublicans vote against it.

Ryan's plan of simply rushing it out as fast as it can get is starting to run out of steam, and the Teapublicans are starting to get antsy over it.

And misogynist conspiracy theories

Also, a thought occurred to me. One reason we're not expecting impeachment anytime soon is because of the Republican majority, right? But what if the situation deteriorates to the point that Pence goes down with Trump? I think that means Ryan, as Speaker of the House, becomes President.

Is the title of Speaker generally given to someone in the majority party? If so, I wonder if that might exactly the thing to prompt a republican impeachment effort. Do it before midterms in a last ditch effort to keep a Republican in the White House if it looks like the Democrats might manage a majority in the House.

So yesterday, my congressman had a very dark encounter.

Yesterday, an individual barged into my office in Washington and made a disparaging remark about the fact that I fly the Pride Flag outside my office. He then went back out into the hallway outside my office, removed the flag from its holder, threw it to the ground, and stomped on it. He told my staff that the flag was "disgusting, immoral, and goes against everything that is right." The Pride Flag is more than just a symbol of pride for the LGBT community—it stands for love, understanding, and unity.

Congressmen being congressmen, however, he didn't let it get him down:

As a Vice Chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, I have flown this particular Pride Flag since 2013 in solidarity with the LGBT community. I have committed to fly it proudly until LGBT people have all of the same rights I have and until our laws protect LGBT people from discrimination and violence. Sadly, the violent and disturbing behavior of this individual yesterday demonstrated that we aren't there yet.

His actions yesterday—intended to intimidate and demean—only make me and those that love freedom and justice want to fight that much harder. We simply MUST pass the Equality Act now! Introduced by my colleague, Rep. Cicilline, the Equality Act would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include protections that ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

What kind of excuse do these Americans to hate a group of people who by now haven't done anything to them at any moment? Jealously? Or willing ignorance on their part just to satisfy their ideals?

Common sense. I'm sorry, let me put that in quotation marks as it is neither common nor sensical. "Common sense". The kind where a thing is true 'cause everyone knows it's true, and everyone knows it's true 'cause they heard everyone else say it's true.

"Common sense" dictates that the entire reason we have economic anxiety is that Mexicans are taking our jobs.

"Common sense" dictates that the reason violent crime is at all-time record-breaking highs is because blacks and Muslims will murder people at the drop of a hat.

"Common sense" dictates that we don't need airport security or Coast Guard, we need a border wall, because all those immigrants are getting in by just walking through our nonexistent security.

Ever watched Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader? It can be pretty mind-blowing what people believe. I vividly remember one person, when asked whether the Mexican or Canadian border was larger, answering, "Well, I always hear about how we can't secure our border, so I'm going to guess Mexico."

The GOP thrives on this ignorance. Many are victims of it themselves. Remember the accusations of voter fraud in New Hampshire, based on Democrats bussing voters into the state? Remember how the defense of that ridiculous statemet was "Just ask anyone in New Hampshire"? "Common sense".

That is where these people are getting their facts from. The answer is that they aren't, because they don't need facts when everyone knows they're right. Their statements don't come from studies or texts, they come from what their gut tells them is true, 'cause their neighbor believes it and their wife believes it and their mama believes it.....
