Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Simply putting this out here for people to see. Recent statement by my dad on millions being uninsured if Trump Don'tCare passes:
"Most of the people complaining about how they're not gonna have health insurance, they have smartphones! Why are they complaining about losing their insurance when they have smartphones?! The government shouldn't help people so much! This country has so many crybabies!"
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."
Your dad is parroting that slimeball Chaffetz? Try asking your dad to name a single decent healthcare plan that only costs as much as one smartphone + cheap phone plan. Also try pointing out that the GOP once made this same argument using fridges instead of smartphones.

Disgusted, but not surprisedA person on the other politics board I follow posted this picture
◊. It basically outlines how getting Melania citizenship following her and Trump's marriage relied on Trump submitting tax returns for the last 3 years and needing 2005 in particular to be squeaky clean. In other words, if the Trump Administration are the ones who leaked the returns, the reason it was that particular year is that was the one year Trump was required to play by the rules.

I think the argument here seems to be that if one can afford a Smartphone, they can afford a healthcare plan. Now, I did a quick search on Amazon, and I found that, if one were willing to lower their expectations, they could a Smartphone at a whopping 16 dollahs', whereas the average annual deductible for a standard healthcare plan seems to be, let's see here... Ah. $4316 according to Google, and that's just for individual plans; a family plan is $7983. That's roughly 500 $16 Smartphones or so, just in case anyone was curious.,

I'm actually reading a book right now on the Goldwater campaign and, more importantly, the movement that supported him in my native Orange County, California.
So I'll get back to you on that once I'm finished.
Though one indication that things have changed is that Orange County voted Democrat for the first time in 80 years. Whether that applies to other areas in the Sunbelt is something I'm going to check.

History is a long series of dominos falling.
You can talk about how the American Revolution led to the French Revolution which led to the Napoleonic Wars which led to a rise in German nationalism which led to Prussia unifying Germany which led to the Franco-Prussian War to World War I which led to the Russian Revolution which led to World II and the Cold War and etc.
I mean I'm really over-simplifying it but you get the idea.
Remember death panels?
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotFrom what I understand, Meals on Wheels helps a lot of senior citizens.
Does it not dawn upon these bastards that one day, they will be old and need to be taken care of by a program or home? Hell, a lot of them are already that age now.
I just hate these politicians. They're orifices that learned how to walk like people do.
Once again, they screw over some of the people most likely to vote for them. Am I wrong, demographically speaking?

Do not obey in advance.
Ah, but the ones proposing these cuts tend to be rich enough to not need Meals on Wheels for the most part. They can afford the better homes or hire live-in assistants.
They either do not understand or simply don't care that Meals on Wheels is literally a matter of life or death for a lot of people.

Disgusted, but not surprisedThere is no greater sin than a "free lunch," after all. But only if it's provided by the government. "Real" charity is a-ok. And yet, the insufficiency of charity has been known for over a century, and part of why progressive policies were enacted. However:
"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." - 2 Corinthians 9:7
(NIV translation; used by the Evangelical churches I attended as a kid).
I would argue this is one of the most counterproductive verses in the Bible, because it provides a way out for "christians" who just don't feel like giving "at the moment." So with taxes despised (ignoring that whole "give unto Casear" thing) and charity optional even by supposedly "religious" standards, it's no surprise so many people are left un-helped.

At least there is some hope. According to the article some of the republicans leaders declared parts of the bill dead on arrival. If we're lucky those will include the parts about cutting those programs, or the GOP would be hardheaded enough to attempt to force it though as is, stalling the bill.

"You can reply to this Message!"

Ugh, Trump is such a whiny man-baby. So much for being a "strongman".
