Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

x2 Las pelotas, tal como Argentina es la mejor nación hispanoparlante, el español rioplatense es la mejor variedad de español, o por lo menos, tenemos al mejor escritor de la lengua española. Now seriously, all dialects are as good or bad as each other.
x5 I guess it could be. It would explain why nobody has it translated that way

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVUm... back to US politics, not Central/South American linguistics please? Anyway, GOP seems to be backpedaling a bit on all their claims about the new healthcare bill, apparently because people are starting to catch on that it is absolutely horrible. Will their support base notice and call them out on it, or will they just accept it like they've accepted everything else so far?

While it's likely the bill will fail now, it's not entirely impossible for it to pass. In any case, Ryan in the GOP aren't any more likely to give it up than they were when Obama was in office. They'll go back to the drawing board. And in the end, they may well have to take the path Boehner suggested; dress it up with conservative wording and leave it as is.
So I just did my regular check on what's what for 2018 and it turns out that Orrin Hatch is running for reelection in Utah, which is a bit surprising due to him having pledged in 2012 to not run in 2018, with a poll from the end of last year having 71% of voters wanting him to retire and only 19% wanting him to run again.
I continue to have my fingers crossed for Mc Mullin to run and take the seat.

New Survey coming this weekend! What's this that I hear about Trump giving the CIA "new authority to conduct drone strikes against suspected terrorists"? I thought he and they hated each other's guts and were unofficially in a cold war (with the CIA being suspected of having direct or indirect involvement in at least some of the anti-Trump White House leaks).

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."For the benefit of the non-Americans, what is a 1040? I get that it's tax related, but given that she specified a code, I'm assuming there's different types of tax form?
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.
