The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The mexican spanish is superior not the argentinian spanish.

Now seriously, all dialects are as good or bad as each other.

[up]x5 I guess it could be. It would explain why nobody has it translated that way

Um... back to US politics, not Central/South American linguistics please? Anyway, GOP seems to be backpedaling a bit on all their claims about the new healthcare bill, apparently because people are starting to catch on that it is absolutely horrible. Will their support base notice and call them out on it, or will they just accept it like they've accepted everything else so far?

While it's likely the bill will fail now, it's not entirely impossible for it to pass. In any case, Ryan in the GOP aren't any more likely to give it up than they were when Obama was in office. They'll go back to the drawing board. And in the end, they may well have to take the path Boehner suggested; dress it up with conservative wording and leave it as is.

So I just did my regular check on what's what for 2018 and it turns out that Orrin Hatch is running for reelection in Utah, which is a bit surprising due to him having pledged in 2012 to not run in 2018, with a poll from the end of last year having 71% of voters wanting him to retire and only 19% wanting him to run again.

I continue to have my fingers crossed for Mc Mullin to run and take the seat.

If Hatch loses then who becomes the Pro Tempore of the Senate? That person could wind up being President if things blow up on the Republicans.

Why Liberals would be Foolish to Try and Primary Joe Manchin

Eight years ago, Rep. Mike Castle of Delaware was headed to the U.S. Senate. Joe Biden had left his seat open upon ascending to the vice presidency, and Castle, a Republican, appeared to be in the perfect position to take it. Delaware is a solidly blue state, but Castle had built a moderate record, was well-liked and held an early lead over his three potential Democratic opponents. His only problem: That moderate record cut both ways. By September 2010, the tea party wave was cresting and Castle got swallowed up. He lost the Republican primary to tea partier Christine O’Donnell. Two months later, O’Donnell lost the general election by 17 points, and Republicans failed to win a majority in the Senate.

West Virginia leans heavily Republican on the federal level. Trump won it by 42 percentage points in 2016. Republican Shelley Moore Capito easily dispatched — by 28 percentage points — Democrat Natalie Tennant in the 2014 U.S. Senate race — the last Senate race in West Virginia with a Democrat not named Manchin on the ballot. Tennant, who was the secretary of state, was deemed a “top recruit.” But she performed about as you’d expect for a non-incumbent Democrat running for the Senate from West Virginia.

and the big takeaway

ll told, the chance of a non-incumbent Democrat winning a Senate seat in West Virginia in 2018 is probably somewhere between 1 percent and 2 percent.

But, Justice Democrats TOTES know what's best for our country and Dems, amirite?

What's this that I hear about Trump giving the CIA "new authority to conduct drone strikes against suspected terrorists"? I thought he and they hated each other's guts and were unofficially in a cold war (with the CIA being suspected of having direct or indirect involvement in at least some of the anti-Trump White House leaks).

Trump may hate the CIA but he's also the guy who said we should just "bomb the hell out of them" in regards to Iraq, so I'll be very much not surprised if this turns out to be true. This is pretty goddamned consistent with his horrible, horrible attitude towards foreign relations.

Steve King: Blacks and Hispanics 'will be fighting each other' before overtaking whites in population

http://www.cnn.com/2017/03/14/politics/kfile-steve-king-prediction/index.html

Credit for sticking to his guns, I guess?

Mr "We can't restore our civilization with somebody else's babies." is doubling down on his prior comments.

"Jorge Ramos' stock in trade is identifying and trying to drive wedges between race," King told Iowa radio host Jan Mickelson on 1040 WHO. "Race and ethnicity, I should say to be more correct. When you start accentuating the differences, then you start ending up with people that are at each other's throats. And he's adding up Hispanics and blacks into what he predicts will be in greater number than whites in America. I will predict that Hispanics and the blacks will be fighting each other before that happens."

For the benefit of the non-Americans, what is a 1040? I get that it's tax related, but given that she specified a code, I'm assuming there's different types of tax form?

[up] it's the standard federal tax form. It comes in varying levels of detail depending on the complexity of that person's taxes. There are also state tax forms, but I forget their number offhand, or if they're the same across the board.
