Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

x7 The Washington Post covered it the same day as Daily Kos. That's something.

He could, but if he did pardon him, that would only serve to further undermine the paranoid old man's presidency more than it has been already. If Bannon does end up being convicted and pardoned in the same week, (maybe even the same day,) all that's going to tell America is that the paranoid old man is completely willing to free anyone who has committed a crime so long as it suits his interests. Which means it might also be in his interests to leave Bannon to rot.

Trump would still have his fortune if he lost the presidency, if Bannon turned on him he might nto be left with anything, I'd be shocked if Bannon didn't have enough dirt on Trump to see Trump put in jail.

Given all the dirt dredged up so far, I have some difficulty conceptualizing what kind of stuff that Bannon could have that would hurt Trump.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIt would have to totally concrete proof of Trump committing something like treason.
Mc Cain is also calling on Trump is put up or shut up with regards to the wire tapping BS.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. And tomorrow, Mc Cain will fall in line and vote to have the investigations anyway
Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if most of the Republican Senators voted this down, if they go ahead with it its asking for embarrassment at best. When the Democratic response is essentially "Bring It", they realize that this is nothing but hot air. Unless there was wire tapping...for a justified reason. That coming out would be worse.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. This can't be anything but hot air. The point still stands that Trump—provided he remembers he's the president—can pick up the phone and demand the relevant agencies explain themselves, which they're legally bound to do.
And if they won't answer Trump, the chances of them answering Congress are just above the chances of one of us spontaneously teleporting to the best restaurant in Rome.
It's been pointed out that if Trump was caught doing something incriminating on a wiretap, it would be because investigators are wiretapping foreign (most likely Russian) officials and he was in contact with them, not because he himself was being personally wiretapped.
He's been oddly silent since he made that accusation, though. Wonder what happened.
When Trump is silent on something, that's when you know something bad is in there. At least from Trump's perspective. The tax returns, for example, probably just show that Trump really doesn't have very much money, which he would think everyone knowing is the end of the world, but it's pretty much the only thing he doesn't constantly whine about. Maybe he claimed that he paid contractors on his taxes when he actually stiffed them, and he's worried about what would happen if the contractors in question found out.

Trump's revised travel ban order loses its first court battle
The first hundred days is becoming a massive wake-up call for the Great Pumpkinhead. He keeps hitting the snooze button, but it just goes off again five minutes later.
Trump was doubtless expecting that being POTUS would be just like his companies and TV shows: he says jump, and everyone scrambles to fulfill his whim. Thankfully, there are judges, federal attorneys, and civil servants who respect the law, and will tell the Orange One: "You can't do that; the Presidency doesn't have that power."
This Space Intentionally Left Blank.

It literally has no limits, if it's a Federal Crime.
It doesn't matter how heinous it is.
If President Trump wanted to Pardon everyone at ADX Florence, legally speaking, they'd be released tomorrow.
No, ifs ands or questions about it.
Sure he'd face ENORMOUS political backlash, but there's nothing anyone can do to stop him
