Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

we get that, is just that wanderer and myself noticed that people in this threat look somewhat shock at the idea a demagogue president could actually happen, like it was some imposibility that somehow happen and nobody can explain why, where we come from places were is pretty much the norm(I mean in argentina "I will fuck the previous administration" is pretty much a given while here in venezuela we are living the right fear of a super lefty goverment...which surprising dosent seen that diferent from GOP maddness) which make the US come as REALLY naive in politics right now.
But in my experience dealing with populist goverment with dreams of dictatorship you are doing great so far as the GOP have been unable to actually create a good plan(and they wont of course) and trump unstable behavior is costing the orange house more and more popularity each day, im impress in how people are behaving against Donald so far.

"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"It bears repeating, that for America, THIS IS NOT NORMAL. This is not something we've been taught to expect, and it's not something we've been trained to deal with before now. We have, in general, been taught to expect better than this of our government. Individual experience, of course, varies. But part of why resistance has been so strong is it's been built into our culture and to a limited extent our institutions.
Everyone here takes their personal right to free speech very seriously. It's been famously abused lately, but it's coming in handy right now.

In the 6th, Slotin is basing his run off his experience and his ladder-climbing..but that didn't work for Clinton. Plus the political effect of fresh faces and the change..any change..attitude in the air.
Would it be a good idea to devote as much effort to calling Slotin supporters and the man himself to try and get him to drop the race, rather than split the vote?
It is a jungle primary. Slotin and Orsoff (sp?) making it both to the second round would imply that no Republican candidate will be contesting it. Such happened in the 2016 Senate elections in California, but based on that polling it doesn't seem likely.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanJungle primary. So it doesn't matter. Ossoff is running away with it on the Dem side and is leading (but not by much) overall.
The real trick is to make sure it stays civil and friendly so the non-Ossoff candidates' supporters lend their strength to his come the runoff.

@Ace: sure, is just that so far most of the negativity in this thread almost look like some weird self pity going on here, as the idea there is something wrong with people instead of system haivng flaw in a moment of weakness, I can understand why people will go to trump even if a bad thing to do so far and sorry for said thing, but it feel really "first world problem" in how people express about this.
if you ask me, I dont care about trump, he will go as faliure, what it really worry me is the state of politics, now is the age of th charming politician which could rise in voting for a personality rather than a solid plan, something very comon here in latin america, that dosent speak well for the states.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"@Drake: Trump wasn't a failure of democracy, quite the opposite; the average voter didn't fall for his bullshit. Unfortunately, our political system is rather undemocratic for the self proclaimed "leader of the free world", and thus Trump came into power against the will of the American people rather than because of it.
Thing is, Trump is not at all charming (nor is he a politician), so he's hardly a basis from which to draw conclusions. Trump is an aberration in US politics, pure and simple.
I've met such a real charmer — in fact, I work for him as a volunteer. He's director of the local historical preservation society, and manages the tourist railroad on which I work as a volunteer. He's very good at persuading people to make donations to the preservation trust. If he ever decided to run for public office, he could go far.

This Space Intentionally Left Blank.Yup. We can't really take anything from Trump, other than he's a total idiot and a lot of his supporters were racist and took kindly too his explicitly bigoted campaign.
The events and lead up that that made Donald Trump President is literally the quintessential example of a Perfect Storm, even more so than Obama in 2008, as sad as I am to admit it.
New Survey coming this weekend! The various agencies have been ranging from open contempt to barely concealed contempt, and slow walking is a tried and true strategy. Laws don't carry themselves out after all, and people like DeVos are not the end all/be all of their departments.
The main exception are agencies like ICE, and their mandate all but guarantees they'll attract the kind gun-ho for these times. Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our lives
So this just happened the other day: As of this moment, Bannon is currently under criminal investigation for, all of things, residency fraud. Turns out that during Trump's campaign, while he was registered to vote in Florida, he may actually have been living in California, and it's only now that this little tidbit has come to light.
No clue if this will damn him in the slightest, and it says something that of everything he's done, this is the shit they bother to dig into, but hey, anything helps.

So, guys. Remember Tim Canova? Asshole who tried to run against DWS in Florida?
New Survey coming this weekend!

I agree with you on that notion as well. Though me in particular always looks for the light at the end of tunnel, no matter how long it is.
