The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

There's probably gonna be a upsurge of eco-terrorism as a result, too. If the government keeps on letting companies run rampant with polluting the environment and refusing to do anything to help curb Climate Change despite the obvious effects it is having even today, I can see a lot of environmentalists going crazy and wrecking shit up to try to force their hand.

[up][up] That would require there to be any power on Earth capable of meaningfully checking America. No such power currently exists, and no power in the foreseeable future will be able to challenge American hegemony in the western hemisphere.

One of my more...blunt relatives said as much when we went out for dinner and drinks. He was even harsher than you though — he claimed that a lot of Americans are stupid and that they need to suffer to be open to change. He explicitly said that it would take another Great Depression or something.

[up] As I said, that will just make things worse. People will just become resigned to life being shit and decide that holding power is inherently evil. (which it is, but it's a Necessary Evil in our modern world)

That's the worst kind of accelationist thinking, though. The first Great Depression brought in the last wave of fascism. A second one would be equally unlikely to have pleasant consequences.

Clinton's presidency would be just one impeachment attempt after another and annual government shutdowns followed by an equally devastating loss in the midterms.

Like a Sanders one would have been better? The Republicans would have tried to impeach him for being a Communist. Government shutdowns already happened under Obama, and as for devastating losses in the midterms...were you here in 2010 and 2014?

Sanders would have had the same thing happen to him that happened to Obama (assuming he actually won which I highly doubt). He'd have been in office for a few months, failed to magically change "the system" and then been abandoned come the midterms.

[up] Reading comprehension is your friend, I basically said it wouldn't be especially more successful than Clinton's presidency in all likelyhood.

Sanders would have won because he isnt a woman. Media would have tried smearing him based on other things like (((atheism))) or whatnot, but it still wouldnt be like him being a woman.

Thats my opinion.

Sexism Chuvinists (and theres lots of em in america) base their worldview on Gender first. Everything else is just an addition.

Yes. I am saying that democrats didnt do enough to pander to the sexist vote.

It's already happening. While the Recession and it's aftermath don't provide a 1:1 comparison, the rise of nationalism and fracturing of international institutions in the wake of a global economic crisis is a profoundly worrying typology.

@Ambar: Let me also add that, especially after the election, I'm quite convinced that we were already pretty much fucked well before election year. Sanders was literally the only candidate in either of the primaries who took the trend of declining democracy seriously prior to Trump's election (by far the single most troubling development of the past decade, though I'd argue it's been going on since the 70s), and while he probably would've tried to do something about it, it's more or less guaranteed he'd have failed, meanwhile under a Clinton administration the gradual decline would've continued unaddressed much like during the Obama years and Bush years, which is preferable to the situation we're in now, but would simply be delaying the inevitable.

Is hard to said, trump is just a part of a large issue with american right now, people who are tired of the "establishment"(whatever the hell that means in the moment) and the fact that Clinton didnt have the personality or the "presidencial charm" which is why she lost against obama and have so many trouble with Trump, have she win I feel the right voter would feel "cheated" but I think Sander would likey mantain more stability, not much, but at least more than clinton.

Honestly, the fact that you're still engaging this argument 6+ months after the fact is doing a lot more to prove their point than any of their actual points.

Ugh. This all started because of all the negativity whenever Sanders is mentioned in this thread (I just used to read it to get US news) - only a few weeks ago people here even wished for his death. Like it or not, he's still one of the leading voices on the American left. Yes, I know I got carried away, and I'm sorry for derailing this thread. It just makes me sad to see that not only progressive politicans like Sanders, but also progressive economic reforms get easily discredited by all sorts of ridiculous narratives (I've lost count how many times I've seen 'Democrats have to choose between progressive economic and progressive social reforms' pop up in the media). Whatever sad

Sanders' more...ardent fans flipping their shit over Tom Perez becoming DNC chair over Keith Ellison (never mind that both are qualified, are friends, and are willing to cooperate) even after he made Keith Ellison deputy chair doesn't exactly make them seem particularly reasonable. Granted, it's probably not too fair to blame this on Sanders himself. As Ambar has posted before, the issue isn't so much Sanders himself as the people who put him on a pedestal.

Oh, and to add to the Weimar comparisons, the Weimar Republic was actually experiencing an economic upswing right before the 1933 election that catapulted a drug-addled Austrian corporal to the position of Chancellor.

Though calling the Clutch Plague integral to fascism is misgiving. Mussolini's fascist government gained power in 1922, and he coined the term.
