The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up] Trump and Pence aren't going anywhere as long as McConnel and Ryan have power. Both of them would have to go/lose their major power before you could even start impeaching Trump and Pence. Then we'd probably have... President Nancy Pelosi... I'm not sure that's a good President either.

Against Trump, Pence or Ryan, though, she absolutely would be.

Ehh. We just saw what Ryan trying to get rid of ACA looks like. He's not going to magically be able to think up a better version just because he's given a different job title.

Is there even a procedure to remove high ranking American judges? I know that the Justices on the SC get away with saying outrageous shit all the damn time.

Supreme Court Justices can be impeached through a similar process as a President can be, but that's literally never happened in the entire time the United States of America has been a thing.

The main reason Ryan hasn't built up a reputation as an oblivious moron (which he absolutely is) is because most of his job right now is really routine and his job before didn't have much individual power. If the media hyperfocused on him the way they focus on any potential president, people would probably notice his absolute lack of charisma and his really strange obsession with exercise. (Personally, I think he's trying to be a "man" without understanding the first thing about it.)

At least one of the MSNBC anchors has posited the theory that Pence might declare Trump unfit for presidency and take office himself, under a mental health clause written into the rules of succession.

Based on what Maddow is saying, If/when Trump goes down, Pence goes with him.So, President Ryan it is, then. Godfucking dammit.

Ryan falling upwards into the presidency would be one of the most absurd but realistic outcomes to Trump's presidency.

I'm sure some Ryan fanboys are going to make it seem like he's been playing 4 D chess the entire time though.

Eh, the bar is so low right now that Pence or Ryan would be a relief. They can be trusted not to destroy NATO at least.

They also, notably, haven't questioned why we shouldn't be encouraging the building up of nuclear arsenals at home and abroad.

It's sad that we'd be content with that now.

Yeah, policy-wise, Trump really isn't too different from someone like Pence or Ryan. While Trump may not really care about punishing LGBTQ folk, or killing Social Security, he's perfectly willing to throw them under the bus. And of course, he's already shredding our civil service and social safety net in the name of deregulation and tax cuts for the rich. But Pence (and maybe Ryan) isn't going to blow up our foreign policy because he reads conspiracy theories. And then there's bog-standard American racism and the fever-dreams of Trump and Bannon and their ilk.

Is impeachment seriously been considered? Or is this just hypothetical and "wouldn't it be nice?" talk?

It's been stated several times in this thread that Congress is currently too favorable for impeachment to be a thing that happens any time soon. Depending of if or what kind of information on corruption is found, that may not matter, though.

As long as the House is controlled by Republicans who are happy to use Trump's incompetence as a way to get their legislative agenda bullied through, they wouldn't ratify articles of impeachment if he had direct endorsements from Satan and Hitler.

I think many people also feel it'd be best to move on impeachment on grounds that are absolutely bulletproof, rather than half-ass it, fail, and make any further attempt even less likely to succeed.

Why nothing that has come out pre- or post-inauguration manages to meet that criteria is subject for a lengthy debate.

Impeaching Trump anytime before a democratic congress takes over depends entirely on Trump being enough of an idiot that he becomes a conservative liability. Entirely within the realm of possibility, but conservatives are too concerned with having a President with an extra R in his name ot worry about anything else.

Impeachment with this Congress in charge isn't gonna happen unless Trump's approval ratings dip below 30%.

I mean, that happened to Bush. But the US is way more polarized than it was in 06-08, and the GOP has become a cult with an extremely servile rank and file.

Trump adviser admits to contact with DNC hacker.

Said adviser being Roger Stone, incidentally, so more like "former adviser". Still...

Well, there's more judges than there are presidents. Odds were in favor of at least one of them being a reasonable person who realizes this ban is all kinds of harmful

Bernie plans to flip red states that voted for Trump.

"The truth is, and I think anyone who objectively assesses the situation has to appreciate, that the model the Democrats have followed for the last 10 to 20 years has been an ultimate failure,” Sanders told the Huffington Post from his Senate office in Washington.

“That’s just the objective evidence. We are taking on a right-wing extremist party whose agenda is opposed time after time and on issue after issue by the vast majority of the American people," he explained. "Yet we have lost the White House, the U.S. House, the U.S. Senate, almost two-thirds of the governors’ chairs and close to 900 legislative seats across this country. How can anyone not conclude that the Democratic agenda and approach has been a failure?”
