The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up] Maybe in 2018-2019, when the House goes Democratic, and if the Senate also goes Blue (though I'm a little more skeptical on that one).

Not surprising. Trying to bring back manufacturing is like We Will Use Manual Labor in the Future. It makes no sense, especially because if factories want to remain competitive and profitable, they'd start shifting more toward automation anyway. Low-level manufacturing jobs are quickly becoming a thing of the past, and they're not coming back. It's time people realize that and start focusing on education so that they can work in those higher-level jobs that are becoming the norm in our information-driven market.

The Rust Belt had no problems with voting Democratic before, so maybe enough of them will try to atone in 2018/2020, or at least have the decency to stay home and not screw over humanity again.

Extremely. Consider every conversation and every piece of data that's ever passed through that phone to be compromised.

Considering that Trump habitually tweets every single idiotic thought that ever happens to pass through his moronic, retarded, pathetic excuse for a brain...

Eh, maybe yes, maybe no. You be the judge.

He fought that long and hard though, only two other judges in Canadian history have been formally asked to resign and they had the decency not to appeal. But at least the system worked in the end, though the perp in that case got off on appeal.

Is there even a procedure to remove high ranking American judges? I know that the Justices on the SC get away with saying outrageous shit all the damn time.

Meanwhile, in New Hampshire, the marriage age is going to stay the same...ridiculously low. (For added fun, that's the second lowest legal marriage age among the states - the article doesn't tell which state goes beyond even that.)

I posted that earlier. I also saw an article (Breitbart so take with grain of salt) that the old guard leaving was customary after an change of administrations, but that they're usually allowed to stay on until replacements are appointed.

They kind of have to stay on, otherwise there's no one doing the job they're required to do. I would hope that Sessions has enough competence to realize he needs to leave those people there until he can actually hire forty six people to replace them.

And this in courtesty of Rachel Maddow: They've apparently admitted that the highest levels of Trump's transition team (Pence) did, in fact, know about Flynn being a foreign agent, and Flynn has officially registered himself as having worked for Turkey for a while. They're doing their best to make it look like Trump didn't know, but holy shit there's no way he couldn't have. The only thing in doubt is whether he understood why that was important.

So, President Ryan it is, then.
