The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So, first bill in 2020 with president... uh... Gillibrand? should be the "Federal Clean Slate Act" restoring every possible thing to the way they were before Trump assumed office and striking Trump out of the official list of Ps OTUS.

I'm just so glad James Comey and Trump are at odds with each other about the unfounded wiretapping accusation. When Comey violated the Hatch Act to get him elected, I was worried that Trump would be able to wield the FBI as his own personal cudgel.

I think this makes it pretty clear that Comey has no intentions of being a toadie for whatever crazy thing crosses Trump's mind at a given moment. He just really hated Hillary. This doesn't make him an ally, mind, but it does signify the weakening of Trump's regime.

I'm kinda wondering how long until trump fires him so he can use the FBI for himself.

House Committee approves of Bill that would allow Employers to test the genetics of their Employees for 'Workplace Wellness Programs'

Don't you get it? The government is now aware of the lizard people and are making their push to force them out of hiding!

Seriously, genetic screening tests for insurance?

As someone with a disability (granted I self identify because in the civilized world that's mostly helpful)....I'm not going anywhere near the US, unless its on official business (unlikely), until your government relearns that "eugenics=bad".

A Tennessee Legislator is trying to ban porn: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2017/03/08/a-tennessee-legislators-anti-porn-resolution-is-irresponsible-and-ignorant/. Keep in mind US sex has already gone down by 15% since the 90's...

That's a non-issue, the SC has already ruled that porn (aside from the obvious stuff that involves abuse, etc) is protected by the 1st Amendment. Meaningless grandstanding, and impossible to enforce anyway.

That porn ban is also the kind of thing I'd expect from them regardless of all this other craziness going on.

Sean Spicer, Reince Priebus and Mike Pence apparently broke a law by tweeting about the Jobs Report within the hour it was released.

Unfortunately, it's not an impeachable offence like Conway's sponsoring of Invanka Trump's Merchandise line...

Generic screening tests for insurance? Not only those things are ridiculous for mere insurance, those things are expensive, but economics is never the forte of this administration that is allegedly being led by a businessman.

Reading from this thread never fail to make me cringe and speechless. Those right wing nutjobs and their undying love for eugenics.

Pres. Trump to ask Angela Merkel (Chancellor of Germany) on how to best deal with Putin when they meet next week, according to US Officials.

[up] That just reminds me of the twist of the South Park episode on 9/11 'Truthers': That Government Conspiracies are a Government Conspiracy.tongue

I have played a fair share of Crusader Kings 2 and none of them has the level of intrigue and conspiracy that I have seen in America. I guess its just a matter of time until its the level of gratuitous violence and jerkassery surpass CK 2 as well. This is a good time to live if you're one of those conspiracy nutjobs.

[up][up][up] I don't think Merkel can help Trump. She is a politician, not a wizard.

Via Equiblog: Noah Smith: Trump's "industrial rebirth" is a dead-end Martin Sandbu: Globalization will survive

The gist of these articles is that there is no way to go back to the "golden days" when industrial manufacturing was a primary employer in America. No matter what else Trump does or does not do, this particular promise is literally impossible, and so he will inevitably betray his Rust Belt voters.

Radical ideologies and conspiracy theories amusingly have a lot of overlap. They both tend to involve a lot of paranoia and belief that the people are sheep of some sort.
