Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This is one of the reasons that the War on Drugs is a thing. It turns minorities into felons thereby depriving them of their voting rights and it nets companies more labor.
House Speaker Paul Ryan says that Ryancare 'is the closest [Republicans] will ever get to repealing and replacing Obamacare'
, so maybe if it fails, they'll stop trying.
Not this year, at least, and considering Congress is rushing this thing as fast as possible, they won't like it at all if it passes and the results are dire.

They do that, they'd be committing political suicide, both to their constituency, and to Trump who will be pissed that they're making him look like a liar.
So, the US Ethics office just told the Executive Branch where to stick it [1]
, and is calling for disciplinary action for Conway after she went out and pimped Trumpwear like a street hawker.
Also, Pence just promised to bring the full force of the US government down on Wikileaks if they release that data from the CIA [2]
, so I am left wondering if his handlers gave him the wrong instruction booklet. Or if he legitimately has no idea what is going on.
It may turn out that the Obamacare repeal/replace will be defeated in the most ironic way possible: Republicans' inability to agree on what that should look like. Delicious, delicious, especially as many knowledgeable pundits have pointed out that Obamacare as it currently stands is the only way that such a system can possibly work. There is no "replacement" that would do any better, unless said replacement improved the coverage or the subsidies, or tossed the whole thing and went to single-payer.
Pence is playing the unaccustomed role of Only Sane Man in the Trump administration. He's an actual politician with actual knowledge of how to govern, even if his ideology is hideous. He's surrounded by people who are either totally clueless or actively engaged in tearing down government, and he has no idea what to do. Signing on as Trump's VP may become the worst choice he ever made politically... unless Trump ends up impeached or assassinated.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"the fucking scariest part is that ryancare is like, half a step from outright suggesting we grind up poor people and sell them as dog food, and there are people in the GOP (and their think tanks) that think it's NOT CONSERVATIVE ENOUGH.

Or Trump honestly doesn't like any leaks under his rule; even leaks that would make him look good on the surface. Because any leak means he has 'traitors' and undisciplined people working under him, and he can't stand looking incompetent.
As for the Ethics office, that's fantastic! Go after Conway! She deserves to get kicked out of the White House! And if they legally can, they should try to force Trump to cut ties with his businesses!

Then we'll get a real-life Oddworld (Man, that franchise is really Harsher in Hindsight when you play it today) where the world is ruled by Corrupt Corporate Executives with evil militarized police as security who are polluting the shit out of it, killing all the wildlife, destroying the culture of the people and using them as slaves, and they grind up workers to use as food when they run out of ideas.

I'm genuinely convinced that if the GOP could get away with they would replicate the laws from The Purge
New Survey coming this weekend!
They'd have to abolish the 2nd amendment first, because otherwise someone would just replicate the Purge episode from Rick & Morty.
And we all know they'll never do that, no matter how many other amendments they violate in broad daylight.

So Lord Dampnut has been blitzing Yemen for a week.
This is a good time to mention that the Yemeni government told the US to fuck off after the botched raid.
If you don't mind I'm going to Nürnberg to mic up some courthouses.

Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies. But he only received a small million dollar loan!
Honestly though, by all accounts, he blew through that and was having severe problems...until his father died, and Trump inherited pretty much everything. Trump has siblings who apparently didn't inherit anything, possibly because they don't seem to be horrible sociopaths.

...
On the one hand, I wouldn't want to see their loved ones be hurt just because of their own fuck-ups. But on the other hand, seeing themselves be hurt just because of their own fuck-ups would be delicious schadenfreude.
