Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Just means if they want to implement it they have to do it fast before anyone can object in any meaningful sense.
Sean Spicer says Trump does not approve of Wikeleaks
, in reference to their most recent batch of leaks on the CIA's potential to hack phones and smart TV's.
So there's another ally he's throwing under the bus. At least he's now (sort of, kind of) has a position that is consistent...

NYU just did a study that gender-swapped Hillary and Trump and it seems that the results were surprising. People find female Trump even more likeable than male Trump or even Male Hillary still.
We heard a lot of “now I understand how this happened”—meaning how Trump won the election. People got upset. There was a guy two rows in front of me who was literally holding his head in his hands, and the person with him was rubbing his back. The simplicity of Trump’s message became easier for people to hear when it was coming from a woman—that was a theme. One person said, “I’m just so struck by how precise Trump’s technique is.” Another—a musical theater composer, actually—said that Trump created “hummable lyrics,” while Clinton talked a lot, and everything she was was true and factual, but there was no “hook” to it. Another theme was about not liking either candidate—you know, “I wouldn’t vote for either one.” Someone said that Jonathan Gordon [the male Hillary Clinton] was “really punchable” because of all the smiling. And a lot of people were just very surprised by the way it upended their expectations about what they thought they would feel or experience. There was someone who described Brenda King [the female Donald Trump] as his Jewish aunt who would take care of him, even though he might not like his aunt. Someone else described her as the middle school principal who you don’t like, but you know is doing good things for you.
What did you find most surprising?
...I was surprised by how critical I was seeing [Clinton] on a man’s body, and also by the fact that I didn’t find Trump’s behavior on a woman to be off-putting. I remember turning to Maria at one point in the rehearsals and saying, "I kind of want to have a beer with her!" The majority of my extended family voted for Trump. In some ways, I developed empathy for people who voted for him by doing this project, which is not what I was expecting. I expected it to make me more angry at them, but it gave me an understanding of what they might have heard or experienced when he spoke.

...Well that was horrifying. And reinforces the notion that Hillary was exactly the wrong person to run this year, because clearly her qualifications were irrelevant.
I mean, FFS, you cannot expect Obama or someone like him to fall into your convention every year, but you need to do some planning when not.

And this is why 2020 might be the year Politics turns into a Celebrity Contest (With Trump and Kanye definitely running, and Oprah potentially running as well).
But yeah, what I really take from this is that you cannot run a Robot for President, not in this modern age. The Candidate has to have some charisma, and unfortunately, Trump did but Clinton did not.
That is absolutely fascinating.
I would very much to see the whole thing, since the clip on the article is on trade, ones of the areas where I distinctly remember that Trump performed better. Emphasis on performance.
And the Unfortunate Implications are still present, though not just in the way that I initially expected:
Daryl [the actor playing Jonathan Gordon, the male Clinton] and I have talked about this multiple times since the performances. Never once in rehearsal did we say, “play this more feminine.” So I think it was mostly the smiling piece—so many women have told me that they’re taught to smile through things that are uncomfortable. It’s been really powerful to hear women talk about that, and a learning experience for me.

Technically, Kanye has flip flopped on whether he's going to run in 2020, or 2024. Currently, it does appear that he's going to run in 2020. Also, I'd advise against saying "I don't trust X to run", because that is how we ended up with Trump.
As for Oprah, perhaps I am misinterpreting her remarks, and perhaps she won't run. With our current political Climate, however, nothing would surprise me.

Have you ever seen Black Mirror? They had an episode that did something similar.
You might want to get this out: law enforcement agencies around the nation are reporting a 911 outage for AT&T customers.
