Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

...Why would Trump want to eavesdrop on peoples' conversations? That's pretty creepy. I'd say that no matter who the President was. Paranoia Fuel.
Do not obey in advance. He became President of the United States just to spite Obama for humiliating him, yet he STILL feels the need to attack him, presumably because he still feels humiliated by him.
Goddamn, Obama really is Trump's Dinkleberg.

New Survey coming this weekend!Dozens of Trump aides point all Criticism at one man: Reince Priebus
. Considering he was told he couldn't go to Mar-A-Logo (along with Bannon, but then Bannon eventually went there) this weekend, and has been hinted by several news organizations (including Breitbart) that Trump is unhappy with him, he may be the next to go, well before Sessions.
That'd be problematic for Trump, though; Priebus is the main line between Neocons and Trump. Without him, (what little) Neocon influence over Trump fades or completely disappears. He'd only have Bannon (Alt-Right Neo-Nazism) and the Kushner's (Moderates/Liberals) to influence him at all. The Republicans would start to disown him as Bannon and the Kushner's essentially make him a Republicans worst nightmare.

Let's be real; Trump's been making noise about running for president for fucking years. He didn't do this simply to spite Obama, he did this simply because he's got a huge ego and finally saw an environment in which he could succeed. Now, he's acting spitefully to Obama, yes, but that's largely because Obama was and is so much more popular than he is right now. But this spite was not why he ran for president.

Trump's actually run for president as an independent a couple times. However, in previous attempts he dropped out really fast when he realized that the vast majority of people had no idea he was even running. Also, there was no one to squeeze money from, since an independent candidate has no fundraising structure or anything.
Sure, he's kicked it around in the past, but never seriously. As for why he's doing it now, his own campaign disagrees with you. During his campaign, campaign spokeswoman Omarosa Marigault stated that all this started in 2011, when Barack Obama made some jokes at Trump's expense during his White House Press Correspondents' Dinner.
"It just kept going and he just kept hammering him, and I thought, "Ohhh, Barack Obama is starting something that I don't know if he'll be able to finish. ... Every critic, every detractor, will have to bow down to President Trump. It's everyone who ever doubted Donald, who ever disagreed, who ever challenged him. It is the ultimate revenge to become the most powerful man in the universe."
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.And now Trump is going to be remembered as one of the worst presidents the US ever had, if only because of how incredibly bad he is at everything the presidency involves.
It's like the cliche in kids movies.
"Can you do that?"
"Oh yeah, that's really easy!"
fail fail fail fail fail fail fail
"Not so easy, is it?"
The problem is that if they take too long to turn on him, it'll tar the entire Republican party as selfish toadies to even the most dense person. Not that they aren't that already, but the fact that Republican resistance basically boils down to "oh I don't like this thing not at all" and then not doing anything at all to stop it, would make any turn even more hypocritical.

You know, that's the thing what actually confuses me a lot sometimes.
Even if we ignore the guy's political stances - like some voters apparently have - the talking about killing terrorists' families, the internenment camps and so on; even if we ignore all that: The guy's still a bloody idiot.
He's not competent in any way. That'd actually the main reason why a lot of comparisons between Trump and most dicators come over as an Insult to Rocks: Because these people usually had something going for them. Former working class, war veteran, pick anything.
Trump doesn't have anything of value, political or or otherwise, to offer to his supporters. He's a rich idiot with no business acumen who somehow managed to land on his feet despite his incompetence.
For example: My mother doesn't even follow American politics (or American events in general) this closely and even she knew for a long time that Trump was a bloody joke.
Sorry, if this came off as ranty, but that's actually what gets me: I'm not surprised that some people would elect a xenophobic arsehole. What I don't get is why they'd elect an incompetent one on top of that.

We learn from history that we do not learn from historyFamily of an Afghan translator still being illegally held by ICE.
They were issued special visas and brought to the US to keep them from being murdered in their home country. ICE arrested them only an hour before they were to be relocated ,and is still holding them, ignoring direct orders from a Cali district judge to release them.

"He's a rich old white guy so he must be smart! Him using loopholes to avoid paying taxes makes him smart!"
His incompetence is obvious to anyone who scratches below the surface (not even that deep). Thing is, a lot of Americans loved the gilding so much they didn't want to scratch beneath it to see the worthless plaster.

Disgusted, but not surprisedSomeone pointed out that in a way, Trump is a fascinating insight into American character insofar as many, many Americans would probably act exactly like Lord Dampnut if they were rich. Gold plate everything, act like a self-important asshole, import an Eastern European model who looks like someone replaced her Botox with puffer fish poison...
He's the perfect metaphor for just how rotten some parts of America are.

Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.
And while not everyone who voted for Trump is like that...I'm pretty sure most of the voting public who are that bad did vote for him.
In their minds, his win validated them.
As others have mentioned before, Trump is basically a poor man's idea of what a rich man is like.

Disgusted, but not surprisedTrump should be the poster child of the Nouveau Riche Trope.
In the class but all crass.
I find funny how other new Billionaires, specially the Silicon Valley ones, aren't so adamant in showing the world how rich they are but Trump even after being born rich, acts like the worst of the worst.
But what to expect from someone who shat in golden toilets, took golden showers and likes to put his name in everything and lace it with gold?
But somehow he understands the average worker and fights for the common man he relates to.

Inter arma enim silent legesThat's because you can't buy good taste. Trump is a personification of everything bad about America, to the point that, if distant, future civilizations read about him, they might even wonder whether he was a literal golem summoned by conservatives to destroy liberal America — he's that much of a caricature.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."![]()
Trump understands the common man and workers well enough to know how to win them over just so he can screw them over. Which isn't remotely the same thing as actually caring about them.
You'd be surprised how much mileage Trump got from being a fan of fast food.

Disgusted, but not surprisedIt's kind of funny how comparing Trump to anything has become an Insult to Rocks to the point of being a Running Gag.

I mean, calling for an investigation into Obama supposedly doing it strongly suggests he's aware it's illegal.
