Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Also CBP, TSA, and the incredible oversight that there is no agency directly under the command of the Judiciary to enforce their rulings-seeing the Federal Marshals blow off the courts in favor of a politically appointed Attorney General was legitimately terrifying.

And in Earth-3 we're bickering about whether pres. Sanders is actually capable of accomplishing what he wants and if he's creating a cult of personality or not. Meanwhile, Earth-4 is everyone is cowering in fear at Holy Roman AMERICAN Emperor Cruz' attempts at turning the US into a theocracy and lamenting that the GOP pulled a coup on Trump during the election since there's no possible way he could've had a chance at winning the presidency, while Cruz did have a chance. Finally, on Earth-5 everyone forgot the name of the POTUS. It's Kasich, by electoral college coup.
No, I need it. It helps me fit in.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Actually the "Earth-2" where Clinton wins is an endless circus of impeachment attempts and continued obstruction by the GOP because they still control every other part of the government other than the Presidency, and might very well end up with enough power at the state level in 2018 (because the incumbent party almost always loses seats in congress in midterms) to enact constitutional amendments. "Earth-3" is the same circular firing squad Labor in the UK went into after Corbyn ended up in charge of the party leading to epic losses in the midterms of 2018, and "Earth-4" and 5 are about the same as the one we're in now without the massive protests (just moderately sized ones) because Kaisich and Cruz have a veneer of respectability. There was pretty much no good outcome to 2016, because the trends which lead us here have been progressing for decades without being meaningfully addressed; only one of the 2016 candidates (Sanders) seemed interested in seriously addressing these trends (the others either didn't realize what was going on or didn't care), and he almost certainly would've failed to do so.

No, we're definitely Earth 2. On Earth 1, the Nazis won, and 2016 was the Clock Roaches (or Time Squad) balancing time's books.

Plain and simple, Purdue is a firm Trumpist. He's even wearing the hat, but...
Ossoff strikes back: Democrat rushes to define himself with trio of ads
In the first ad, former Gov. Roy Barnes calls Ossoff a “relentless warrior against corruption” and Rep. John Lewis says he can “shake things up in Congress.” It argues that his role as a national security aide in Congress will help him root out corruption.
A second ad focuses on his campaign pledge to attract more high-tech jobs to the district, which stretches from east Cobb County to north De Kalb. And a third spot, debuting online, features the Democrat’s most critical comments of Donald Trump this campaign.
“He’s not only embarrassing us on the world stage, he could start an unnecessary war,” said Ossoff. “I’ll work with anybody to do what’s right for our country, but we can’t let Donald Trump put us at risk.”
He’s also attracted the attention of the National Republican Congressional Committee, which called him a “Bernie Sanders-type candidate” trying to win in a ruby-red district.
“Not only is Jon Ossoff not fit for his district, it’s not his district at all. He does not live in GA-06,” said Maddie Anderson, a spokeswoman for the committee. “Aside from this factor, which should disqualify him, he is completely and wholly unprepared to serve in office. We are looking forward to giving the Democrats a dose of reality over the next several months.”
(Ossoff said he lives south of the district’s border so his girlfriend of 12 years, an Emory University medical student, can walk to work. Members of Congress don’t have to live in their districts, and Ossoff said he will move to the 6th after she graduates.)
Still, Ossoff has fast become a darling of the Democratic party. His campaign claims nearly $2 million in donations in less than two months. He has racked up celebrity support and a string of big-name endorsements. And national Democrats are pouring staff and resources into his race.
This race is

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesComey is rejecting the wire tapping nonsense
Mr. Comey, who made the request on Saturday after Mr. Trump leveled his allegation on Twitter, has been working to get the Justice Department to knock down the claim because it falsely insinuates that the F.B.I. broke the law, the officials said.
A spokesman for the F.B.I. declined to comment. Sarah Isgur Flores, the spokeswoman for the Justice Department, also declined to comment.
Mr. Comey’s request is a remarkable rebuke of a sitting president, putting the nation’s top law enforcement official in the position of questioning Mr. Trump’s truthfulness. The confrontation underscores the high stakes of what the president and his aides have unleashed by accusing the former president of a conspiracy to undermine Mr. Trump’s young administration
The fact that the FBI has not actually released the statement Comey requested suggests dissension in the ranks which is a thing I've noticed before - the Bureau's actions have been pretty inconsistent in whether they favor Donald or not.. We know there is a signifigant pro-Trump faction but it hasn't meant the Bureau is following him in lockstep.
With law enforcement in general, it depends on the precinct. There is a large scale of difference in which they handle institutionalized racism.

Not entirely surprisingly, former workers at Mar-A-Lago have come forwards with information that Trump can and has listened in on landline phone calls there

Agreed. In light of his bullshit recent wiretapping accusations, this is hilarious.
It's also somewhat horrifying that someone who apparently did this in the past either doesn't know or doesn't care that the POTUS can't legally order a wiretap — and currently is the POTUS.
It would not suprise me at all if it turns out that Trump has illegally wiretapped Obama's and HRC's phonelines.

Disgusted, but not surprised

Meanwhile on Earth-2, this thread is arguing on the best ways President Clinton can codify maternity leave into Federal Law.
