Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The campaign ads in 2018 are going to be something. The staffers have so much to choose from and have to get into 15 seconds. And, if the Clinton campaign is any indication, probably should spell out the details. I don't envy the guys who'll have that job. Edit: Nevermind it is a job...
The push back on that bill to privatize all federal land probably spooked them. That's in addition to the immediate post-election protests and the actions that everyone is seeing. The bridge has been burned.

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesIt's impossible to enforce that court order universally when the immigration enforcement community has a lot of black shirts who respect Trump's word over the word of a court that rules against him, because he's letting them off the leash.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."ICE and other agencies are still stepping up anti-immigration activity all across the board. There are plenty of laws they could use besides the EO. And its not just airports: A "Dreamer" was arrested after Criticizing Trump in public.
The secret is everything is a distraction, and everything is important. We've got to watch literally everything right now.
And yeah, ICE has definitely felt like it has permission to be more aggressive in regards to enforcing their duties. And with a country as big as ours, it's damn near a guarantee that some TSA agent or other is going to feel emboldened enough to detain anyone who looks "suspicious" without some very clear and very strong consequences for doing so.
Nihilism is all about "nothing matters, so why bother caring" and people who are attracted to law enforcement tend to care an awful lot about things. Specifically, law and order. How they care and what they think is acceptable in pursuit of those goes varies from person to person and also from environment to environment.
Pretty sure "suffering" is not really an integral part of nihilism.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Just because it's a liberal city doesn't mean that everyone there is a liberal.
As far as individual motivations go, some people might just enjoy having power over others, others might be more along the lines of Just Following Orders, while still others might genuinely think it's the right thing to do.
At least, that's how I see it.

Oh God! Natural light!E.U. Lawmakers Call for End to Visa-Free Travel for Americans
: " The European Parliament has passed a nonbinding resolution calling for the reintroduction of visa requirements for American citizens, raising the stakes in a long-running battle over the United States’ refusal to grant visa-free access to citizens of five European Union countries.
In the vote on Thursday, European lawmakers played tit-for-tat in their dispute with the United States, demanding restrictions on American travelers unless the Trump administration lifts travel requirements for citizens of Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Poland and Romania."
Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite.

It's gotten to be a little ... obvious ... when they're doing so. Is that really the only play in their handbook?
