Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Which means nothing-prior to this regime, it was a given that anyone that high up would recuse themself from any possible conflict of interest. I will take notice if Senate Republicans put him to an ouster vote.
The Senate Democrats are now officially calling for Sessions resignation, and for a special prosecutor to investigate this case.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.@ Kkhohoho-
I hope so, although I would have thought prior to his confirmation that the guy being a white supremacist would have been enough to keep in him power (those were the days).
I'm a bit skeptical though that he will be forced to resign. Sessions' actions are less clearly criminal than were Flynn's. And I suspect (supported by the fact that Republicans voted for Sessions) that Republicans know how much the party base loves Trump and so they considered the potential damage of having voted for the guy as a less serious risk than rejecting any of his nominees. And forcing Sessions to resign would signal disloyalty to Trump.
Edit- Although, I'm sure there are plenty of people (i.e. Kris Kobach) who would enforce the law in the same unequal way as Sessions and are less obviously white supremacists. So, if the Republicans can get one of these guys, they probably have a lot less incentive to keep Sessions.

Trump's new Travel Ban will not include Iraq, according to US Officials
. So instead of 7 banned countries, it'll be 6 (Iran, Syria, Yemen, Libya, Somalia and Sudan).
Because all the terrorists come from those countries, and not from others not on the ban list, amirite? Trick question: what's the total count of terrorist attacks perpetrated in Western countries by nationals from the six nations on the travel ban executive order? zero
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"And the first state to embrace the zeitgeist...note
A Trumpian bill makes its debut in the state Capitol
Senate Bill 195 was greeted mostly with awkward silence from members of the Senate economic development committee, and will not move this session. But it is the kind of measure that could bedevil Republicans next year — an election year, if they cannot formulate the proper response.
The bill violates most legislative norms. Its author is state Sen. John Albers of Roswell, a very conservative Republican. But the bill’s content is union-inspired.
Virtually every Democrat in the Senate (some signatures are illegible, so it’s best to fudge) and the most conservative members of the GOP caucus are co-sponsors — a total of 38 in a chamber of 56.
The bill makes only one small demand: All companies that accept state tax incentives, and all companies awarded state contracts, would be required to send an email or two to the Capitol if they shift any jobs out of state.
Just to let the right people know.
Tax credits wouldn’t be yanked back. Contracts wouldn’t be canceled. The only thing to happen would be the placement of a simple fact on the public record. [Wink. Wink.]
Albers said his bill isn’t punitive, but communicative. I would add that it also goes straight to the we’ve-been-suckered zeitgeist of last year’s presidential campaign. The bill’s formal name: The “Georgia Jobs First Act of 2017”
Tilley [a Mc Donough lobbyist for the Communications Workers of America and who first conceived of (a narrower version of) the bill] acknowledges that SB 195 is a reflection of the times we live in. Specifically, the worry among white working class workers that they no longer have a secure place in our society. His union endorsed Democrat Hillary Clinton last year. But many CWA workers were – and are – Trump supporters.
“A lot of my members vote Republican. If we’re not talking to both sides, we’re turning our backs on part of our membership,” he acknowledged.
He’s getting comfortable with the nickname he’s given SB 195. “I call it my Trump card,” Tilley said.
Huh. Well the unions are solidly struggling together...(and there's more to the story, specifically Albers giving stereotypical responses to questions on how the bill may among other things and frighten businesses off and set them up for retaliatory action). note Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our lives
You know how it is with most people. They're just gonna take Sessions' statement about the KKK as a bad joke at worst and discount all the allegations since they're "just hearsay" and bringing up the whole "prosecuting a KKK member" thing, ignoring his atrocious civil rights record which lends a lot of credence to that "hearsay".
Regarding an issue from the last page: for people who do just want to get a quick round up of the news and events unfolding, this
might be a good resource. For the most part sources are reliable, (although some are a little questionable) sometimes very local, and there are often updates as new info comes in.

| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |Sean Spicer screwed the tweet.
He meant to say Carson was confirmed as HUD Secretary, but wrote it out that Trump was HUD secretary.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Donald Trump Jr. addressed a dinner on Oct. 11 at the Ritz Hotel in Paris, hosted by the Center of Political and Foreign Affairs. Its president, Fabien Baussart, and his Syrian-born wife, Randa Kassis, have cooperated with Russia in its drive to end the Syrian civil war, according to U.S., European and Arab officials. In December, Mr. Baussart formally nominated Russian President Vladimir Putin for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Mrs. Kassis is a leader of a political faction endorsed by Russia in negotiations to end the war in Syria. The couple said they don’t represent Russia and are solely focused on ending the Syrian conflict.
The meeting in October represents one in a string of contacts over the past year between members of the president’s inner circle and individuals connected to Moscow and to Russian interests. The Wall Street Journal in November reported Donald Trump Jr.’s appearance at the event.
Trump JR likely got $50K for an October speech for a Moscow-allied think tank.
It's so obvious that these guys are compromised.
New Survey coming this weekend!Well, when we we first met him he was feuding with people's eyes about dots in a picture. Really, his first press conference being about the size of the crowd was quite the Establishing Character Moment. Then this week, he's resorted to taking his own staffers' phones away to cut down leaks.
I think communicating and building consensus on policy and gathering allies is beyond him.
If it was a staffer, it was probably deliberate. The Orange House is already leaking like the unsinkable Trumptanic. What's a little trolling for good measure?

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Carsen would be terrible, no doubt about it. But I doubt that he's in bed with the FSB/a threat to the trans Atlantic alliance. Its why I think that Pence would be better than Trump, he isn't crazy on foreign policy matters and his awful domestic agenda is probably going to be put into place even with him as VP and POTUS.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Agreed. If we can get rid of Trump, it isn't smooth sailing with Pence. But it is just the normal white-water rapids we'd be navigating with a Republican president and supermajority. None of the weird shit like jumping snapping piranhas and unexploded Soviet mines.
Mike Pence would be content merely to be a shitty President.

.
Too little, too late, means diddly, other then that Trump is now recognizing the "Russian Problem" is serious to the populace.
