The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

House Republicans Announce Only Republicans Are Allowed to See New Health-Care Plan:

Yesterday, House Speaker Paul Ryan boasted that his party would follow a deliberate, transparent process to repeal and replace Obamacare. “This is how the legislative process is supposed to be designed,” he told the Today show. “We’re not hatching some bill in a backroom and plopping it on the American people’s front door.” Today, House Republicans made it known that they will release their plan tomorrow and that it will only be made available to House Republicans. Representative Chris Collins tells the Washington Examiner the plan “would be made available Thursday morning to Republicans in a basement room of an office building that adjoins the Capitol.”

"It'll be real transparent. By the way, only select people will see it. In a basement. In a totally separate building." I'm sorry, the only transparency I'm seeing here is how easily seen through your lies are. Really?

[up]x4 Do they want a Dem Supermajority? because that's how they get a Dem Supermajority.

[up]x5 Yeah, considering that at some point the Democrat House Members will have to be able to see that it exists, they will at some point read it. This is just for "Drafts" and what not, which is still scummy, but not as bad as it could be.

If the Republicans don't allow Democrats to even have any chance on seeing the Official Document, then we should start panicking. That's Weimer Republic-turned-Nazi Germany levels of deceit if that happens.

[up] NASA isn't surprising since Trump actually likes NASA outside of climate science; massive prestige projects are absolutely his sort of thing.

From what I'm gathering there isn't exactly a very clear definition of what "encouragement" is in this context.

Which doesn't surprise me at all. Trump doesn't really like specifics, the immigration EO was also very sloppy and imprecise as to its contents which was why the ACLU and other organizations were able to have such a strong ground contesting it.

The catch comes with the fact that it's other people who have to make the plans. I'm hoping he just gives NASA money and they can decide what to do with it.

[up][up] Unless he lied to VP Pence, he's probably not going anywhere without a subpoena.

But I can't believe that Sessions, of all people, was a Russian stooge. Out of every one in Trump's administration, he was one of the last people I was expecting to see with Russian Ties!

I don't know that it's enough to paint him as a "stooge" per se but the fact that he felt the need to hide it is cowardly at best even if it was actually inconspicuous.

Obama Administration Rushed to Preserve Intelligence of Russian Election Hacking

American allies, including the British and the Dutch, had provided information describing meetings in European cities between Russian officials — and others close to Russia’s president, Vladimir V. Putin — and associates of President-elect Trump, according to three former American officials who requested anonymity in discussing classified intelligence. Separately, American intelligence agencies had intercepted communications of Russian officials, some of them within the Kremlin, discussing contacts with Mr. Trump’s associates.

The warning signs had been building throughout the summer, but were far from clear. As Wiki Leaks was pushing out emails stolen from the Democratic National Committee through online publication, American intelligence began picking up conversations in which Russian officials were discussing contacts with Trump associates, and European allies were starting to pass along information about people close to Mr. Trump meeting with Russians in the Netherlands, Britain and other countries.

Holy actual shit.

All these people with questionable ties to Russia...do they just not get that the main reason the Kremlin has been courting them is because Putin and his ilk (rightly) believe that them gaining power would screw up and weaken the USA? Or do they not care?

Not sure which is worse, TBH.

Evan Perez just said it on CNN, so I suppose I can here: Kislyak wasn't just ambassador, he was Russia's "top spy recruiter" in D.C.: SVR.

Eh, ambassadors have a long history in covert intelligence. It helps to make your biggest spies/recruiters the ones with diplomatic immunity.

I wouldn't start dancing on Grand Wizard Session's political grave just yet.
