The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Man, its kinda weird that the Tea Party are basically pulling Evil Versus Evil against Trump. They may or may not agree with his platform, but they refuse to pay for it unless Trump cuts stuff that his base/swing voters would ditch him over.

[up][up]Probably nothing. Trump'll just get the money from idling the civil rights division of the DOJ—unless he orders it start investigating men's rights—and the savings from not having ambassadors in the UN or in any of the member states.

Also, every credible news outlet needs to see this tweet in multiple certified letters:

If Trump had come out and not thrown his own feces, he would have passed the Presidential test according to [you]?

[down]Wasn't quite being serious, but I've yet to find out how to do the sarcasm mode/sincerity mode signs. And they could probably sell cuts. Just say their phasing out the "handouts for the welfare queens" and blame President Obama for the subsequent problems. Trump did seriously claim that President Obama was behind the protests and actions against him—yet strangely he didn't coordinate a winning vote for Nov 8th—and a number of comments on the AJC articles show a disturbing tendency to repeat his latest lunacy.

That's the thing, unless you go after defense spending (which Trump wants to boost), or social programs (which Trump can't touch without destroying the GOP and himself) over 70% of the US budget is basically untouchable. The remaining cuts hurt, but they don't give enough of a net boost to pay for his platform. Unless he wants to raise taxes.

[up] It's called deficet spending, and the GOP has historically only gone after the President for raising the national debt when the incumbent is a Democrat. Much like Democrats tend to be a lot more vocal about human rights concerns about American military operations when their party isn't in power.

Correct. But now a faction within the GOP seems to actually want to walk the walk on spending while their party is in power.

[up] Until they actually vote against Trump rather than simply talking, I remain skeptical. The GOP believes they have far more to fear from primary challenges than the Democrats, and until that perception changes or Trump loses the support of GOP primary voters, he's going to be very hard for Republicans to defy.

Which can just as easily be explained by the fact that the GOP has a more or less monochromatic voting bloc in contrast to the diverse set of interests which the Democrats purportedly represent.

The one redeeming factor of this clusterfuck is that's democrats are now organizing on the state and local level in droves. That's one step.

Politifact's fact-checking of Trump's speech. The Independent claims that 51 out of 61 statements Trump made were false.

Oprah Winfrey hinting at 2020 Run against Trump.

Oprah, you're a nice lady, and you've done a lot of great things for People all over the world. Please, do not run. Do not turn Politics into a Celebrity Crap Show for 20+ years, please. It's bad enough we're gonna have Trump and Kanye running, we don't need you to run as well.

She'd definitely win, though.

Yeah the only celebrity I'd feel remotely comfortable running is Arnold, because he has actual political experience at this point and is a sensible person overall. That is if he could actually run, I know that he can't.

The article title is a bit misleading though because I didn't get the impression she was considering it that strongly.

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/julian-assanges-days-at-the-ecuador-embassy-may-be-numbered/

Some opinion polls show former banker and right-wing opposition candidate Guillermo Lasso as winning the runoff — a political shift that would mean the end to one of South America’s remaining leftist governments.

Lasso told news organizations that if he became president, he would ask Assange to leave the embassy because harboring him was too expensive. Assange is wanted in Sweden over sexual assault allegations.

“Ecuador had no business spending a single cent protecting someone who definitely leaked confidential information,” Lasso said. “I will take on the responsibility of inviting Mr. Assange to leave the Ecuadorean embassy at the latest 30 days after the start of our government.”

Which would be something of a departure from their current habits, but hey, who knows what Assange will try if his ass is on the line?

I have no problem with the Presidential race turning into a celebrity reality show provided that the celebrities involved are capable of demonstrating their political savvy, understanding of issues, and willingness to work towards a better future for America during the year-long shitshow we call our election system.

The problem with Trump is not that he is a celebrity. It's that he is a bigoted, egomaniacal moron.
