Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Been a while since I've been here.
Just finished watching Trump's speech. I'll give him credit for managing to not make the speech all about him, but I still had to guffaw when he asked Congress to quickly confirm his Supreme Court nominee.
Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.A bunch of platitudes, but no proposed mechanisms for the not-terrible goals. And, of course, some terrible goals too.
And a proposal to replace Obamacare with Obamacare.
EDIT: Steve Beshear, former Kentucky Governor, is doing the response

Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages? So, I just read Trump's speech, and even though there's a lot of bad things in there, surprisingly, there are some good things in there as well (specifically the reshaping of the FDA so that it's faster and the want to improve Infrastructure).
The Problem is, though, that even if the good things are introduced to Congress, none of it would ever survive the House. Sure, a lot of what Trump wants would make it through the Senate (even with Democrat Support on some things), but the Uber Objectivist-Libertarian Tea Party, that forces all other House Republicans to kowtow to their will, would never spend 1 Trillion Dollars without massive spending cuts everywhere else, would rather eliminate the FDA entirely then rework it, is against creating Tax Credits for health because it's a 'New Entitlement', so on and so fourth. Most of Trump's plan from his speech, even the vile things Republicans would normally support (like School Choice), can't pass the House without massive Cuts elsewhere; Trump doesn't want to cut Entitlement Reforms, Republicans don't want to cut Military Spending, and the cuts in Government Bureaucracy would not be enough for them.
Basically, either the House goes Democrat in 2018, or Trump will literally get nothing done economic-wise for 4 years. And, considering we're nearing another Debt Ceiling Crises soon, that'd completely wreck the economy.
So nothing most of us didn't already know: nothing good is going to happen because of Trump's administration. If anything good does happen it will be in spite of it.
Even in the areas where he does (seem) to have good intentions, his sheer incompetence, ignorance, refusal to admit blame or acknowledge information that defies his world view, reluctance to listen to anyone who isn't a simpering Yes-man, and (above all) his refusal to learn will prevent anything being accomplished. The biggest obstacle towards "success" for a Trump administration isn't the Democratic Party, the Tea Party diehards, the Muslims he scapegoats, Obama, Hillary Clinton, or whatever bogeyman he thinks of next week. It's Trump himself.

Disgusted, but not surprisedAre people really praising this speech as evidence of being presidential as if we're all just going to forget about how the past month has gone? The worst part about this speech is that it's going to make people forget just how rancid this administration has been and will be.
And call me cynical, but I'm disgusted by him using a soldier's widow to score political points after his recklessness and impulsiveness got that soldier killed in the first place. This is a ploy to make himself look good. He doesn't actually care. He just knows that paying tribute to a fallen soldier is an instant applause line, so people will temporarily forget that he's to blame.
That's right, boys. Mondo cool.
I guess some people are desperate for any signs of normalcy or basic human decency in the guy who is in the Oval Office with the nuclear football. I know I was when Trump gave a seemingly "presidential" speech when he won the election. That ship has since sailed.
Bringing up the Yemen raid for points? Yeah, that was low. Especially since the late guy's father wants an investigation.
Disgusted, but not surprisedCNN is kissing his ass right now.
Bernie's response is good though. How does the 74 year old independent have more fire than half the Democratic Party?
Besides, it's just something Trump does every few weeks. He spouts an endless stream of bullshit and acts like a Spoiled Brat, then periodically acts vaguely presentible and everyone's so eager to try to normalize the situation that he basically gets to hit the Reset Button with everyone who wants to pretend we didn't elect a criminally incompetent, incompetently criminal, Russian-puppeted sex criminal.
Once again, this is NOT normal. Nothing about the current situation is normal.

No, Trump is not presidential, and he is not a good President (or person). But, I will say "This is Good" or "Trump did this Good" when(/if) he does something good. There is a lot to despise about his Policies and Actions so far, and we must continue to despise any future policies and actions he takes, but to despise good ideas just because they come from him is overkill. Republican Commentators and Politicians did that to Obama, and look at how things are now; their party is full of Angry, Moronic Racists who will not take anything less then exactly what they want, or they will destroy their own party and politicians, and will willingly associate with Anti-Democratic forces to achieve their goals. I've already started seeing a number of Republicans/Alt-Righters say they will not support Trump, or will support his impeachment, if he does allow non-criminal illegals to become Citizens/Residents.
Hate the man, hate his bad policies, don't hate good policies just because they are from him.

For crying out loud, Trump just the other fucking day tried to claim that threats to the Jewish community were a False Flag Operation. I guess he doesn't feel the need to use the "global elitist" dogwhistle anymore.
Trying to find good policies among Trump's bad ones is like digging through a pile of toxic shit to find a tiny gold nugget. And even the nugget is probably toxic at its core (see Trump's original infrastructure proposal which was more or less all graft).
If the Trump administration pushes forth a reasonable policy or nominee or whatever, then by all means support it! The Democratic senators did just that when Trump actually picked a decent VA head. But for the most part, the Democratic Congresspeople haven't had to worry about that: nearly all of Trump's policies and picks have been bad ones or badly implemented.

OMFG. He is like a Spoiled Brat who throws tantrums and bullies the other kids but gets away with it by showing off Puppy-Dog Eyes whenever he thinks the adults are about to lose patience with him.

Oh really now?
TRUMP: Hey folks, I just had my 120th birthday and I just want everyone, yes, I just want everyone to know that after outlawing any and all elections, we are celebrating our fiftieth year of Making America Great Again, and I am told that we will finally achieve this, yes, we we will finally achieve this goal as soon as yesterday. But before that, Old Man Trump needs his nappies.
