The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up]Even Greenland is a fair bit further. The US is the only other country one can reasonably reach from Winnipeg without air travel, which would be probably be prohibitively expensive for a school trip.

[up] They could try Alaska. It's disconnected from the rest of the US, so it might be different.

Eudo: Calling Trump out on his bad actions is not the same thing nor is it related to speculating about whether or not he has a mental health problem. It's kind of disingenuous to act as if that's what I said. The rest of that is rambly junk unrelated to the actual request for us to please stop pointless gossip about mental illness.

Again, not saying we can't call Trump out on his bad actions. None of us want to stop doing that. But we can stop speculating about how we think he's got a health problem when there's not any sure way we can know that without a specialist (Or perhaps Pence in a bid to get him out of office) weighs in on official proceedings of some sort.

The Alaska/Canada border is just as secure as the 49th, and subject to the same regs. Unless you are talking about Russian students.

[up] Even the Russian students would have to swim, boat or fly to get to Alaska, and would still probably get molested by corrupt border patrol. Honestly, Greenland looks like the better neighbor to visit for Canada now.

Alaska's also pretty damn far from Winnipeg. We're talking about a city that's more or less directly north of the North Dakota/ Minnesota border here.

Uuuuugh Trump is going to make the Bush years look like paradise. (And hell, Bush is basically wondering what the fuck is going on with this guy and his issues with the press.)

You know it's bad when W. Bush has to check a fool.

I respect his statements about the press and how power can be corrosive and toxic. Goes to show what the GOP has become.

Do not obey in advance.

[up][up] At least the Bush years were arguably the golden age of video games and the best time to be a gamer, and were the last generation before all the terrible business practices (DLC, microtransactions, forced paid online, season passes, political garbage, obviously rushed games that are patched later, etc.) and the Western AAA shooter/sandbox/action industry domination came in. We don't even have very many good video games coming out anymore to play during the upcoming years!

I... ok I get that videogames are awesome but it seems kind of OFF TOPIC to bring up here? And we did, in fact, make a thread for discussing games and US politics. Let's.. let's not just bring up video games randomly in this thread when it literally had nothing to do with what's been said, ok?

[up]Well then, don't come in this thread if that's troubling you. This is for politics, not games. You can, in fact, choose not to be in this thread if it's distressing to you at the moment.

Gib pipelines and military hardware discounts. Also recognize that the Northwest Passage is Canadian clay.
I see...I see this in your future and so much more. The new president is sworn in after 4 years. The UN passes the appropriate resolution, and all the leaders of the world line up and bend over. And the next president spends hir first 100 days going up and down the line kissing rear ends while university deans commence the same for lost researchers.
That's only the good future though...

I mean, the post-Trump implications are interesting. The US's political capital from President Obama's years is gone. All that invisible groundwork continuously laid and strengthened by ambassadors has probably already decayed with posts being empty all over the world. The next president ever using the term: "leader of the free world" will be in horrible taste.
Domestically, the power of the Presidency depends alot on the personalities in the office and the loyalty of the civil service, to which, the Trump years could greatly weaken the office and accidentally fulfill all those goals about cutting back an unaccountable presidency.
